From Franco’s dictatorship to democracy in Spain: An approach to the position of ABC in the Transition from the dictatorship to the monarchy

Abstract

Fundado en 1903 y editado como diario desde 1905, el periódico ABC acumula más de cien años de historia y de supervivencia durante las distintas etapas por las que ha atravesado España en ese tiempo y hasta la actualidad. De esta manera, el rotativo continuó publicándose durante los casi cuarenta años de dictadura franquista y también en los años siguientes, incluidos aquellos en los que el país sentó las bases de la democracia que definiría la Constitución de 1978. ABC supo así realizar su propia transición y abrazar el nuevo régimen bajo el que seguir existiendo sin querer renunciar a sus principios característicos: su vocación monárquica, liberal y conservadora. Este artículo trata de aproximarse a la manera como la línea editorial del periódico se condujo durante los primeros años del camino a la democracia a la que llegaba como diario consolidado de la dictadura franquista.Founded in 1903 and published as a newspaper since 1905, the ABC newspaper accumulates more than one hundred years of history and survival during the different stages that Spain has undergone at that time and up to the present. The newspaper continued indeed to be published during the almost forty years of Franco's dictatorship and also in the following years, including those in which the country laid the foundations of democracy that would define the 1978 Constitution. ABC thus knew how to make its own transition and embrace the new regime under which to continue existing without renouncing its characteristic principles: its monarchical, liberal and conservative vocation. This article approaches the way in which the editorial line of the newspaper was conducted during the first years of the road to democracy, to which it arrived as a consolidated newspaper of the Franco dictatorship
