São Paulo’s ethnic press and the government action against the abuse of Spanish immigrants at the beginning of the 20th century

Mediado el siglo XIX, Brasil comenzó a recibir una gran afluencia de inmigrantes de origen español, dirigida en su mayoría al estado de São Paulo. Allí fueron empleados como mano de obra en la recolección de café, en unas condiciones de trabajo que no distaban mucho de la esclavitud. A comienzos del XX, los periódicos locales de la colectividad española expusieron ante la opinión pública los abusos a los que los colonos eran sometidos por parte de los propietarios de las haciendas. La prensa de Madrid se hizo eco de esas denuncias, causando tal estupor en la sociedad española que el gobierno decidió prohibir temporalmente la emigración al Brasil. En este artículo analizamos el ambiguo papel desempeñado en este asunto por la prensa étnica paulista, y en concreto por el Diario Español; ya que, si bien fueron sus denuncias las que dieron visibilidad al problema e impulsaron la reacción institucional, el diario no tardó en cambiar su posición al respecto.In the middle of the 19th century, Brazil began to receive a large influx of immigrants from Spain, mostly arriving to the state of São Paulo. They were employed as workforce in the coffee harvest, in labor conditions that were not too far from slavery. At the beginning of the 20th century, the local newspapers of the Spanish community exposed the abuses of the tenants by the owners of the fazendas to public opinion. The press in Madrid echoed these protests, causing such stupor in Spanish society that the government decided to temporarily prohibit emigration to Brazil. In this article we analyze the ambiguous role played in this matter by the ethnic press in São Paulo, and specifically by the newspaper Diario Español. Its denunciations gave visibility to the problem and promoted the institutional reaction, but the newspaper soon changed its position on the matter
