The-se terrestrial dipsadids inhabit lowlandsin South America east of the Andes,between parallels 0º (mouth of Amazon,Brazil) and 35ºS, Río de la Plata, Uru-guay (Myers and Cadle, 1994). Psomo-
phis obtusus has the southernmost dis-tribution of the genus, and was previo-usly recorded for southern Brazil,southern Paraguay, Uruguay and adja-cent northern Argentina (Peters andOrejas-Miranda, 1970; Lema, 1994;Myers and Cadle, 1994; Scrocchi andGiraudo, 1997; Achaval-Elena, 2001; Gi-raudo and Scrocchi, 2002).
In Argentina inhabits two species ofthe genus Psomophis: P. genimaculatusin Corrientes, Chaco, Formosa and Sal-ta provinces (Scrocchi and Giraudo,1997; Lions and Alvarez, 1997; Giraudoand Scrocchi, 2002; Nenda, 2007), and
P. obtusus in Corrientes, Chaco, EntreRíos, Formosa, Santa Fe, and northeas-tern Buenos Aires provinces (Freiberg,1939; Yanosky, 1989; Cei, 1993; Myersand Cadle, 1994; Vuoto, 1995; Scrocchiand Giraudo, 1997; Giraudo and Scroc-chi, 2002). In Uruguay, P. obtusus iswidely distributed throughout the terri-tory (Vaz-Ferreira et al., 1970; Myersand Cadle, 1994; Achaval-Elena, 2001),although the species was not reportedin the departments of Colonia, Río Ne-gro, and Salto (Carreira et al., 2005).Herein we report the southernmost lo-cality of the genus Psomophis and anew department record of Psomophis
obtusus in Uruguay.We analyzed 23 specimens of P. ob-

sus (MLP.JW 1799) was collected on No-vember 2003 by Víctor E. Sansberro inPartido de Tandil (37º20’ S, 59º07’ W),Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Themeasures and scutellation characters ofspecimen MLP.JW 1799 are: 335 mmbody length, 101 mm tail length, tailrepresents 23.16 percent of total length,pupil of eye round, dorsal scales in 19-19-17 rows, 178 ventrals, cloacal platedivided, 63 paired subcaudals, one pre-ocular and two postoculars in each side,1+2 temporals, eight supralabials, fourthand fifth entering the orbit, one lorealin contact with the second and thirdsupralabials, ten infralabials in the rig-

ht side, six of them in contact with ge-neials and nine infralabials in the leftside, five of them in contact with ge-neials.An adult female of P. obtusus(MACN 34477) was collected on 1987 byGuillermo Gnida in Colonia Lavalleja(31º06’ S, 57º01’ W), Salto department,Uruguay. The measures and scutella-tion of specimen MACN 34477 are: 320mm body length, 106 mm tail length,tail represents 24.88 percent of totallength, pupil of eye round, dorsal scalesin 19-19-17 rows, 187 ventrals, cloacalplate divided, 71 paired subcaudals, onepreocular and two postoculars in eachside, 1+2 temporals, eight supralabials,fourth and fifth entering the orbit, oneloreal in contact with the second andthird supralabials, and ten infralabials,six of them in contact with geneials.The locality of MLP.JW 1799 is si-tuated ca. 320 km south from Partidode San Fernando, the previous recordsin northeastern Buenos Aires province,Argentina (Scrocchi and Giraudo, 1997),and ca. 460 km southwest from thesouthern known locality in Maldonadodepartment, Uruguay (Carreira et al.,2005). This contribution provides infor-mation on the presence of Psomophis
obtusus in hilly environments, a habitatnot previously known for the species inArgentina, and reveals a gap in the dis-tribution of the species between nor-theastern Buenos Aires populations andsouthern ones of Tandil hills.
