L’utilisation des Systèmes d’Information Géographique (SIG) en archéologie contribue largement au renouvellement de la réflexion sur les interactions société/espace et société/environnement, tant du point de vue des résultats obtenus que de la manière de les obtenir ; elle influe sur les processus d’élaboration du raisonnement archéologique. Les SIG s'inscrivent dans la démarche générale d'informatisation qui a pour conséquence la dématérialisation de l'enregistrement des données et de leur traitement.
