HOWARD FRAZIER.The subject of this sketch was born at Natrona, Pennsylvania,November 1, 1891, and died at Johnson City, Tennessee, onSeptember 11, 1917. He was a young man of unusual promise,self reliant and always able to do the work allotted to him.He attended the pubic schools of Elizabeth, New Jersey, Argentine, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri, where he completedthe grade schools. He then attended the high school of Bristol,Virginia, and Allegheny, Pennsylvania. He was a student atthe A. and M. college of Mississippi, 1909-1910, and came to Amesas a student on February 22, 1913. While at Bristol, Tennessee,he also attended the Sullins Musical College, where he devotedmuch time to the study of violin music, becoming an unusuallygood player. When not at school he was a cash boy in KansasCity in a Department Store, an office boy in a tannery at Bristol, Tennessee, a clerk in a freight office, later a clerk in a musicstore at Bristol and later had charge of the department of musical instruments in "The Fair Store," Chicago. During his firstsummer vacation in Ames he worked at various kind of mechanical labor. During the second summer he became the official slidemaker of the Department of Botany. He was most efficient inthis work and as student assistant in Morphology, later as assistant in the two-year botany course, he did splendid work, alwaysdoing his work in a most efficient and careful manner. Owingto ill health he resigned his college work and went to one of theDes Moines hospitals. When in somewhat improved conditionhe moved to Bristol, Tennessee, to live with his sister. Here hemade, for the Department of Botany, a fine collection of oaks. Atthe advice of the doctors he went to Miami, Florida, where hepaid some attention to botany, so far as his health would permit.He .then moved to Johnson City, where he died.At Ames Mr. Frasier was active in musical circles and was amember of the Colonial Club. HOWARD FRAZIERlie wrote in April, 1916, "It is certainly a remembrance worthwhile, especially to one who has learned through the Department of Botany to appreciate the wonderfulness of life bymeans of plant and nature study in general. There is quite alarge ridge of mountains just eighteen miles south of Bristolund later in the summer I expect to get acquainted with manynew plants in that district." Then he goes on to say somethingabout a collection of plants made in the Niagara region theprevious summer, which he sent to the Department of Botany.What more can we chronicle of a young life o i the thresholdof doing much useful botanical work ? He was a man of nobleand fine sentiments, of fine character, of a sunny dispositionand was liked by all. His associates at Ames will not forgetthe cheer he brought into the laboratory and work shop.L. H. Tenney of Des Moines became a member ofthe Iowa Academy of Science at the 27th annual meeting in1913, he was, as far as the writer knows, the youngest memberthe Academy has ever had on its list. In the preceding summer he had attended the Macbride Lakeside Laboratory at LakeOkoboji. When he presented himself for admission the director was naturally hesitant for here was a boy who had justcompleted his second year in the high school while the classeswere made up quite largely of college graduates. His probationary admission, however, was not a mistake, and he soon wonthe admiration of everyone by his enthusiasm and untiring industry. Early and late he collected hand specimens of theboulders about the lake, he tramped to far away swamps forshells, he broke up limestone boulders by the hour for fossils ;minerals, rocks, mollusc shells, leaves, flowers, and so forth,he collected in profusion and it was more than a boyish whimfor he arranged and labelled them, he learned them, he askedquestions all day long. Few acquired more knowledge therethat summer and to none did it come with greater freshnessand pleasure.Upon finishing high school he entered Greenville College,Illinois, and a year later he matriculated at the University ofChicago where he specialized in chemistry and geology. Atthe close of his junior year, in June, 1917, he entered the employ 'of the Roxanna Petroleum Company, working for a time inKentucky but was soon transferred to the Rocky Mountain Division with headquarters at Cheyenne, Wyoming, serving asassistant geologist until May, 1918, when he was made chiefgeologist in charge of the work in the Laramie Basin,—anunusual responsibility for a young man of twenty-three years.Because of the importance of this work he was placed on thedeferred list by the draft board, but he resigned in Octoberand entered the Naval Aviation Branch of this service. XXV. 1918on his way to the training camp at Seattle he became ill withinfluenza and died at Salt Lake City on October 31.During his brief life he endeared himself to everyone whoever met him ; clean of mind and body, full of vigor and buoyancy whether on the track, where he won some of the highestsecondary school and college honors of America ; or in the classroom, where he strove to excel ; or in the service of his country, he gave gladty the best that was in him. He planned greatthings for the rest of his school career and life, and those whoknew him best, know that science has lost a most promisingworker and the Academy has lost a very sincere friend.A. 0. DODSON1894-1918Scientific men everywhere realize that with the exception ofcreative work the most important task is the discovery and encouragement of those very unusual minds that seem to have apeculiar adaptability to productive research. Mr. Robert B.Dodson, who was a graduate student in Physics and Mathematics at the State University of Iowa from the fall of 1916until his death in December, 1918, proved himself to be one ofthose unusual men who are worth capturing and encouraging.Mr. Dodson 's mind showed not only the ability to follow theanalyses of another, though intricate, but also that he wascapable of independent thinking. In all his work he was thorough-going. Had he lived he would without question havemade a distinct place for himself in the creative work in Physics of this country. His scientific promise gives his death apeculiar sadness to his friends engaged in scientific work.
