Library catalogues are the main source for getting information on the collection of the library. They have
accompanied books in various forms from the very beginning. In the article, there is presented the history
of the University of Silesia Library catalogues from the very beginning till the present times. There
are described their types and ways of creating starting from clamp catalogues through paper ones and
finishing on the OPAC catalogue. There is presented the process of computer cataloguing and the factors
affecting the structure of computer base of the University of Silesia Libraries network
