Statement of the problem: The purpose of this investigation was to study the interaction of a variety of methylated aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds with several lithium dialkylamide-hexamethylphosphoramide complex base systems. The resulting laterally metalated species, whose preparations were previously either unknown or obtainable only with difficulty were interacted with differing types of electrophiles to ascertain if the intermediate organometallic reagents formed would be synthetically useful.--Page 1
