Quand il s’agit de décrire le graphisme technique, deux approches sont souvent privilégiées : l’une focalisée sur les conditions et finalités sociales de la création des images (pourquoi dessiner des machines ?) ; l’autre vise à mettre en évidence l’émergence d’un graphisme technique « canonique ». L’articulation de ces approches est cependant difficile, car à un objectif social ne correspond pas toujours une technique graphique ou un environnement graphique particulier. Afin de palier à cette insuffisance analytique, nous proposons une nouvelle typologie fondée non sur l’objectif social de l’image, mais sur la fonction de l’image elle-même, ces fonctions pouvant être cumulées selon les différentes techniques graphiques utilisées. Nous distinguons ainsi quatre fonctions principales : rendre compte (fonction testimoniale), expliquer, concevoir, reproduire. Prenant l’exemple des images de machines à l’époque moderne, cette étude vise à tester la pertinence de ce cadre d’analyse.There are two main approaches to analyze technical pictures: one focusing on social conditions and purpose of the creation of images (why draw pictures of machines ?) ; and the other, attempting to highlight the emergence of a « canonical » kind of drawings of technical pictures. However, a combination of these approaches is difficult because a social objective does not always fit with a graphical environment. To overcome this deficiency, a new classification based on the function of the picture itself is proposed. Several functions can be combined in the same picture, and every function fits more or less with some graphical technique. We thus distinguish four main functions: accountability (testimonial function), explanation, design and reproduction. Through examples of pictures of machines in the modern era, this study aims to test the relevance of this typology
