Immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA) is the most common immune-mediated disease of the dog. A range of trigger factors have been associated with canine IMHA, including neoplasia, drugs, vaccines and infectious diseases. Despite this, most cases of canine IMHA are still regarded as examples of primary IMHA in which no underlying trigger factors are identified. It is possible that an as yet unidentified trigger factor may be involved in some of these cases. It is possible that the canine haemoplasma infection is associated with canine IMHA, in a similar fashion to Mycoplasma haemofelis infection causing some cases of feline IMHA. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the two known species of canine haemoplasma, M. haemocanis and ‘Candidatus M. haematoparvum’, are associated with canine IMHA in the UK. Three groups of dogs were recruited to the study.
