A large scale model hydraulic study of inbank and overbank river flow, using a regular sinuous river channel with a mobile bed, was carried out in the UK Flood Channel Facility at Hydraulics Research, Wallingford. The sediment chosen for this investigation had a wide range of particle sizes present, covering the fine sand to coarse sand range. Measurements were made of three-dimensional velocity distributions and bed profiles at cross-sections around the meander. These measurements were used to determine the structure of the flows around the meander and the interaction between main channel and floodplain flows.
