Żydowska Polskość/Jewish Polishness: Past and Present Interpretations

Abstract

What does Zydowska Polskosc (Jewish Polishness) mean to academics and the broader public and how has the concept changed since it\u27s coinage by Jakub Appenszlak nearly a century ago? So many discussions about Jewish history in the Polish lands hinge on the issue of belonging and, thus, one\u27s interpretation of Jewish Polishness complicates any discussion about Poles , Jews , coexistence, anti-semitism, violence, and identity fusion. Using Zydowska Polskosc as a historiographical starting point, this panel will discuss ideas about Polishness, Jewishness, their intersections and their divergences across historical time and reflect on how Zydowska Polskosc continues to animate discussions and debates today
