Have everything set out at the student workstations before the session begins. • Log in to SSC Campus and go into the UNIV 101 Kiosk • Get blue session worksheets (1/person) • Get out peer review packets (yellow folders) (1/pair) • Get out yellow peer review half sheets (1/person) • Get out coffee handout (1/person)   UNIV 101 LESSON PLAN INTRODUCTION  Set Up Have yellow folders, yellow sheets, and blue worksheets at each computer before the session begins  5min Welcome  Hi my name is…. Today’s workshop is to help you get started on your UNIV 101 paper.  Today we will discuss the concept of peer review, find a peer reviewed article, and practice reading scholarly research.  Discuss the fact that they already know how to search – shoe shopping online, google, search YouTube  This session is less about searching, and more about what you do after the searching  ACTIVITIES  15 min What is Peer Review   For your UNIV 101 paper you need to have at least 6 peer reviewed articles, so we are going to discuss peer review and then I’ll show you how to find these sources at the library.  Briefly discuss peer review  Go over peer review checklist.  Either read this to them, or have a different student read each characteristic.  Group Activity: (yellow folders) • Look at articles, work with your partner and use the checklist to determine which ones are Peer Reviewed • Bring them back for a group discussion.   15 min Find an Article   Quick Summon Demo – how to get to it, how to use keywords, how to limit to peer review (5 minutes)  Refer to worksheet – have students pick keywords and search Summon to find a peer-reviewed article. (10)  10 min How to Read a Study  After 10 minutes of searching, stop the class and move on to reading the article they found.  When you read a news article online, where does the author put the most important information (at the beginning)  So, for some reason, scholars put the important stuff at the end.  Which means that when scholars read articles, they read the abstract and then skip to the end.  And that’s what you should do!  Let’s try this with your article.  Read the abstract, then skip to the discussion/conclusion and determine what the author’s concluded in their study.  Then, determine if you would you use this article in a paper on this topic?  If the answer to that question is no, then you aren’t looking at a good article for your paper and should find a new article. 5 min Using a Literature Review  Give students a sheet of paper with the newspaper headlines.   These two headlines give you a snippet of these research studies. What do you need to do before citing the studies in your paper? (find the actual study)   Why? – not enough info, don’t assume they are telling the truth   This is how the literature review or background section works in a research study. You get a one sentence summary of a huge study, so you want to find the full study. You want to read the literature review and then use the reference list of the study to find more sources. This will save you so much time too!   Final Comments  Page 3 of your worksheet outlines four next steps – use the literature review, continue searching, get help from a librarian, and go to an APA workshop!
