Compared to othercompositions by Holst, this work is simpler and more traditional. The intentionbehind this piece is to give more performance opportunities for juniormembers of the orchestra. However, this approach did not lower the standardof the music.  You will still find the music well-knitted. The piece consists of three contrasting movements: Prelude, Air, and Dance.Holst used an English folk melody in the second movement and anotherexciting melody from Italy in the third movement. Originally, the piece had afourth movement, Gavotte, which was removed by the composer. The versionthat you will be hearing tonight is the finalized three-movement version.St. Paul's Suite, op. 29 No. 2Program notes by Kin SzetoHolst dedicated this work to the St. Paul Girl's School where he served as theDirector of Music from 1905 until his death in 1934. The piece was originallytitled Suite in C, but retitled as St. Paul’s Suite to show has dedication to theschool. They had built him a soundproof studio so that he may workundisturbed. This work was written in 1912, one year before the Brook GreenSuite. The work begins with energetic 6/8 and 9/8 time. Then the main themedevelops the entire first movement. In the “Ostinato,” the second violins openand play the same figure throughout the entire movement. On top of that,first violins and the violas alternatively play the melody. Then, Holst used asolo violin to lead the “Intermezzo,” which accompanied by pizzicato chords.In the last movement, Holst used preexisting folksongs as an element in thework including Dargason and Greensleeves.Serenade for Strings, op. 20Program notes by Keehun NamAt the time Elgar wrote this Serenade, he was an unknown composer fromLower Broadheath, England. Although the work was written in the March of1892 and performed privately the same year, it was not heard in public until1896 in Antwerp, Belgium. Elgar built his early reputation from choral workswhich were often featured at choral festivals in England. It wasn't until thepremiere of his Enigma Variations in 1899 at the age of 42 that he was finallyappreciated at-large.The Serenade is dedicated to Edward Whinfield who was an early supporterand encourager of Elgar's work long before he became famous. The firstmovement perhaps best represents both sides of Elgar's youthful energy andchoral compositions. The second movement is full of melancholy andyearning. The third and final movement is simple full of nostalgia beforereturning to the opening bringing the Serenade to a close. Two Nordic Melodies, op. 63Program notes by Kin SzetoAlthough a piano solo and duet versions exist of this work, Grieg originallycomposed this work for a string orchestra. The theme that he used in thiswork first appears in his opus 17 written in 1869.In Folk Style is derived from a 4-bar theme which he develops throughout theentire movement in his use of the different sounds of the strings. In a largecontrast to the first movement, the second movement sounds lively andenergetic with a festive dance tune.
