MSgt Frank Milholland Tlie 13and Described by the International Trumpet Guild as "an ensemble full of variety, panache and virtuosity," Stellar Brass combines percussion instruments with a traditional brass quintet, resulting in an original and innovative musical ensemble performing a broad range of eclectic, musical styles. These styles include music from· the Renaissance period, American folk songs and dances, Latin styles, orchestral transcriptions and Dixieland. In performances, Stellar Brass magically and instantly transforms into many different forms: from a marching band, to a jazz band, and even to barbershop quartet! As truly one of the most popular and outstanding ensembles of its kind in North America, Stellar Brass list of achievements is long and impressive: internationally distributed audio and video recordings and broadcasts; nationally recognized and respected as clinicians, presenting univer~ity; college, and high school master classes; performances at civic and military ceremonies; performances at prestigious symposia such as the International Trumpet Guild Convention, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, and the Colorado Music Educators Association Clinic and Conference; and highly-coveted public performances at major concert halls throughout America, including Carnegie Hall in New York. Tlie :Musicians M aster Sergeant Gary W Poffenbarger, tuba, from Arkadelphia, Arkansas, received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Arkansas State University and a Master of Music degree from Boston University. While studying tuba in Boston with ]. Samuel Pilafian, Sergeant Poffenbarger was coached by Timothy Morrison, David Ohanian, Roger Voisin, and the Empire Brass Quintet. He has performed with the Central Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra, the Boston University Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, the Northeast Arkansas Symphony, and the Interlochen Festival Orchestra. He performed twice at Carnegie Hall as a member of the Epic Brass Quintet. In 1991 Sergeant Poffenbarger joined The United States Air Force Academy Band as a tubist in the Ceremonial Brass and was featured as a soloist at the Armed Forces Tuba Conference in Washington D.C. Sergeant Poffenbarger currently performs with the Concert Band, Marching Band, and Stellar Brass. Senior Master Sergeant Steven]. Kindermann, trumpet, hails from Dallas, Texas. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from Southern Methodist University, and has studied trumpet with Tom Booth, Phil Collins, and Bill ffund. He has performed with the Colorado Springs Symphony, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Opera, the Denver Brass, the Dayton Philharmonic, and was a member of the Springfield (OH) Symphony. In 1988 Sergeant Kindermann joined the United States Air Force as a member of the Air Fo~ce Band of Flight at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. He joined The United States Air Force Academy Band in 1994 and is a member of the Concert Band, Marching Band and Stellar Brass. Senior Master Sergeant Gary D. Stephens, horn, hails from Denver, Colorado. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado. Gary has studied horn with Mark Denekas, Jack Herrick, and Chris Leuba. He has performed with the Colorado Symphony, the Denver Chamber Orchestra and the Colorado Ballet Orchestra. He has been a member of The United States Air Force Academy Band since 1990 and performs with the Concer Band, Marching Band, and Stellar Brass. M Sgt Tim W. Allums, trumpet, hails from Beaumont, TX, and holds both a Bachelor of Science in Music and a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Oregon. His studies in both classical and jazz trumpet led to his receiving the Outstanding Graduate Brass Player and Outstanding Graduate Jazz Player awards upon graduation. Before joining the Air Force, Sergeant Allums · performed on two cruise ships as well as Broadway shows in Indiana. As a freelance musician, MSgt Allums has opened for Diane Schuur, Arturo Sandoval and Eddie Palmieri. He is also the lead trumpet in the Denver based Conjunto Colores. Sergeant Allums joined the Air Force Academy Band in 1997 and is currently a member of Stellar Brass, Marching Band and Concert Band. Senior Master Sergeant John P. Gohl, trombone, hails from Moorhead, Minnesota. Sergeant Gohl received his Bachelor of Music degree in Trombone Performance and Music Education from the University of Northern Coloradf graduating magna cum laude. He has studied trombone with Robert Bailey, Edwar't. Huttlin, Buddy Baker, John Daley, and William Nicholls. He was a member of the Xalapa, Casper, and Cheyenne Symphony Orchestras and performed with the Breckenridge Music Institute Chamber Orchestra and Brass Quintet for four seasons. He has also performed with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and was Instructor of Trombone at Colorado College from 1993-98. Sergeant Goh! joined the United States Air Force Academy Band in 1987 and is a member of the Concert Band, Marching Band, and Stellar Brass. T Sgt Tim Blake, percussion, is a native of Binghamton, NY. He received his B.M. from the New England Conservatory, where he studied with Vic Firth, and his Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School, where he studied with Buster Bailey. He has also studied with Fred Buda, Gordon Gottlieb, Frank Epstein, and Jerry Leake. Sergeant Blake has performed with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, the New England Philharmonic, the Chautauqua Symphony, and the Lincoln Center Institute. Sergeant Blake joined the United States Air Force r .. Liberty in 1994. He then performed with the US Air Forces in Europe Band fro 2001-2005. TSgt Blake joined the USAF Academy Band in 2005 and is currently a member of Concert Band, Marching Band, and Stellar Brass.
