It is a pleasure for Ithaca College to host tonight’s musicalfestival of gospel music, with over 150 voices of talentedstudents. I extend a special welcome to our visiting student performers,and hope that you take an opportunity to look around ourcampus.  We have five academic schools, each of which enjoysa national reputation for excellence. At Ithaca College you will find the perfect blend of liberal artseducation and professional preparation.  Our challengingacademic programs promote critical thinking and hands-onlearning, and our students work closely with experienced andaccomplished faculty.  Located in one of America’s top collegetowns, Ithaca College boasts a lively and sophisticatedresidential community that takes full advantage of its stunningbackdrop – lake, waterfalls and gorges – and a local communityrich in culture and resources. We are also proud of our Martin Luther King Jr. ScholarProgram, an interdisciplinary learning community thatemphasizes citizenship and service in the global community. The program is open to academically talented students fromethnic or racial backgrounds that have been historicallyunderrepresented in American higher education.  If you rank inthe top 10 percent of our high school, have a highlycompetitive SAT score, and strive to exhibit the legacy of Dr.King in the area of leadership, intellectual curiosity, andcommitment to community service, you are eligible to beconsidered for the King Scholar program.  I would also like towelcome the potential King scholars who are visiting theCollege this weekend. Park School of Communications. Weare indeed thrilled to be able to bring these two outstanding schoolstogether for this great event. We would especially like to thankProfessor Gossa Tsegaye of the Park School and Cass Barbour-March,Video and Electronic Broadcast Technician in the School of Music fortheir cooperation with the production. It is hard to believe that it has been almost ten years since we firststarted the Gospel festival. There are several participating schoolswho were with us then that are still here today. This is a testimony tothe teamwork that it takes to assemble such an outstanding group ofmusicians. I’m so proud of all of the student performers, directors,and support personnel. The Ithaca Chamber Orchestra under thebrilliant baton of Maestro Jonathan Pasternack is truly an outstandinggroup of young people who musicianship and talent enable them topull together a first class performance with very little rehearsal time. It should be noted that tonight’s performance, a fusion of a classicalorchestra with Gospel music, is also happening in many otherprofessional orchestras such as the Boston Symphony, New YorkPhilharmonic, Atlanta Symphony orchestra, and the Chicagosymphony. Their outreach to communities of color is expanding theirrepertoire and bridging communities. This festival provides a valuableensemble experience for our music majors, challenging theirprofessional musicianship, propelling them ahead and preparing themfor a bright future in the world of professional orchestras. Gospel Music is truly an American Art Form, rooted in field songs,churches and cultivated throughout years through spiritedperformances around the world. When I was in the Czech Republic inthe summer of 2013 at an International Gospel Music Festival, I wasvery much surprised to see and hear how well they performed GospelMusic. They showed a sincere love for the music and performed itwith amazing authenticity. I’m often asked, what is Gospel Music? My answer is, it is music forthe soul. Gospel means Good News, and it is through this avenue ofperformance that we are able to declare Good News to everyone.  Ialso tell people it’s not just an African-American experience; it is ahuman experience. So sit back (or stand up, sing and clap along) andenjoy this incredible journey and let your soul be filled as we affirm allpeople. — Baruch J. He has been Minister of Music for Harlem’s Convent Avenue BaptistChurch for more than 22 years. At the City Tabernacle of Seventh DayAdventists, he is Organist and Choir Director. Mr. Hopkins serves as ArtisticDirector for Harlem Opera Theater, the Harlem Jubilee Singers, and theCocolo Japanese Gospel Choir. In the nation’s capital he is professor of voiceat The Howard University. He also has previous associations with MorganState University, Westminster Choir College and The Seminary of the East.Gregory is Assistant to the Directors for the Hampton University Minister’sConference. He is Director of Performance Ministries for the NationalConvention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses and Vocal Consultant to the Men’sDepartment of the Gospel Music Workshop of America. Gregory Hopkins hasbeen chair of the judges for the Pathmark Gospel Competition (NYC) since itsinception. Hopkins has won top prizes in the Busetto Competition and MantovaCompetition (both in Italy) and received grants from The Opera Orchestra ofNY, The Opera Index and The Sullivan Foundation. Gregory has performed throughout the Americas, in Europe, Asia and theMiddle East. Recent performances include The Cervantino Festival (Mexico),Orvieto Festival (Italy), Vienne Festival (France) and Quimera Festival(Mexico). He is a featured artist on recordings of: Lost in the Stars (Kurt Weill), BlueMonday (George Gershwin), The Gospel at Carnegie Hall, Done Made My Vow(Adolphus Hailstork) with Baltimore Symphony and I will Lift Up Mine Eyes(Adolphus Hailstork) with Atlanta Symphony. By special request he was askedto sing following Min. Louis Farrakhan’s address at the Million Man March, andalso was a chosen soloist at Carnegie Hall’s 100th Anniversary of MarianAnderson’s Birth. He has been selected as Music Coordinator for the 100thAnniversary of the NAACP. Hopkins has received citations from The White House, The Congress of theUS, The House of Representatives, The Pennsylvania House ofRepresentatives, The Office of the Mayor (NYC), The Manhattan BoroughPresident and Lincoln University.Krista McKenzieKrista McKenzie started singing around the age of six following her dad torevivals. Things really got serious when she started voice lessons as a juniorin high school under the instruction of Mrs. Wanda Saul. She was one of thefew who believed in Krista's ability and has continued to support her over theyears. After high school, Krista attended Jones County Junior College and gota degree in music education. She then transferred to the University ofSouthern Mississippi where she obtained a BA in vocal performance. ThoughKrista loves all types of Christian music, praise and worship is the style thatfits her most. Krista currently serves as the Music Director/Worship Leader atSpringhill M.B.
