Language as a Factor in Aviation Safety

Abstract

This presentation aims to demonstrate the results of the examination of the communication related occurrences stored in the European Central Repository for Aviation Accidents and Incident Reports (ECCAIR). To obtain relevant data for the study, occurrences related to language and phraseology were extracted. The classification showed in which phases of flight communication breakdowns are most likely to occur and why. This presents useful insights into how incidents could be prevented. In addition, the results of a survey pilot and controller survey from around the world will be presented on the use of standard phraseology and English language in aeronautical communications
