Young salmon are raised from eggs in a freshwater hatchery and moved to the pens to grow into adults (4–5 kilograms or 8–11 pounds), which takes about 18 months. Framed with netting, each pen can hold tens of thousands of fish. The harvested fish are processed locally and shipped to restaurants and markets here and abroad. New Brunswick’s salmon aquaculture industry began in 1978, and today it is an important part of the regional economy.
