Tidal bore of the Sélune River, Baie du Mont Saint Michel (France)

Abstract

On 7 April 2004, the tidal range in the Baie du Mont Saint Michel was nearly 14 m. A tidal bore was seen for nearly 2 hours in the Baie and later in the Sée and Sélune Rivers. On this view from Roche-Torin at sunrise, the tidal bore of the Sélune River propagated from left to right. Interestingly, the bore front shape evolved rapidly with time and this photograph is an illustration. In the photo, the central part (deep water channel) of the bore almost disappeared. We saw an undular bore shape with smooth undular free-surface, while the bore front was breaking in the shallower waters (foreground). The bore celerity was about 2.7 to 3 m/s and the bore front height was 0.3 to 0.5 m. Coastal Photography by Hubert Chanson
