I also traveled toRotterdam-Zevenkamp to spend a day in aDutch nursing home, observing nursingpractice and discussing the Dutch model ofhealthcare as compared to care of elders in theUnited States. Further, as a result ofcollaborative e orts between UNH and facultyat Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, aDutch nurse practitioner student traveled to New Hampshire this fall, spending a week observingnurse practitioner practice in several di erent settings and presenting "Breath Taking Decision:3/19/2018 Michele Loos | UNH Globalhttps://www.unh.edu/global/michele-loos 2/3Michele Loos (l.) and UNH nursing student Olivia Black(r.)Dyspnoea in an Elderly Patient".  E orts are ongoing to enhance future opportunities available toUNH nursing students to travel to the Netherlands and Dutch students to join the UNH nursingdepartment as part of their international nursing experience.From Rotterdam, I traveled by train to the cityof Deventer. I spent eight days in this city whichis located approximately 100 kilometers east ofAmsterdam.  My purpose in Deventer was toparticipate in and supervise research related tothe impact of "good neighbors" on Dutch elderresidents' quality of life and well-being in a carehome called Humanitas.  The term "goodneighbors" refers to volunteer college studentswho reside in the Dutch nursing home andprovide 30+ hours of volunteer time per monthin exchange for room and board. Interviews ofthe college students, elders, nursing andprofessional sta  took place in collaborationwith an undergraduate nursing student, OliviaBlack, who was undertaking research as part of an IROP initiative, of which I am the faculty mentor. Initial findings from this research, titled From Care Home to Community: The Impact ofConnection on Dutch Elder Care and Well-being, will be presented at the Eastern Nursing ResearchSociety conference in April, 2018.Another highlight of the trip was traveling to Den Haag with Sores Duman and Peter Daniels, bothprofessional sta  from Humanitas, as well as nursing student Olivia Black, to Nederlandse Schoolvoor Openbaar Bestuur to attend a presentation to a Taiwanese delegation on the Humanitasapproach to elder care. The Dutch model of care o ers insight into how the US can considerimproving elder care.Thank you to CIEGE for supporting my international travel, collaborative e orts with Dutch faculty,and research activities.
