He begins his duties July 1."The appointment of Jim McCarthy cannot have comeat a better time for the School of Health and HumanServices at the university," notes David Hiley, provostand vice president for academic affairs. "The school isat an exciting juncture in its development — therenovation of Pettee Hall, the new Institute for HealthPolicy and Practice and, soon, an announcement of theMcKerley Endowed Chair in health economics. Dr.McCarthy brings energy and proven leadership forthese and other important initiatives. We are delightedwith this appointment.""I am very excited to be coming to a school thatencompasses such a wide variety of disciplines inhealth and human services," says McCarthy. "One ofthe things that drew me to the position was that UNH isso involved in both the practical and academic aspectsof health and human services. The opportunity to workfor a public institution that combines teaching andresearch in innovative ways to improve the health andwell-being of people in the state was especiallyattractive."McCarthy received an AB in sociology from theCollege of Holy Cross, an MA in sociology fromIndiana University, and a Ph.D. in sociology fromPrinceton University. It supports two master in public health programsand provides direct health and educational services tothe New York City's Washington Heights communitythrough a clinical network that includes a Head StartCenter, six primary health clinics located in localschools, a community-based reproductive health clinic,and a variety of health education programs for adultsand adolescents.In recent years, McCarthy received major funding fromthe Andrew W. DURHAM, N.H. — James McCarthy, Harriet and
Robert H. Heilbrunn Professor of Public Health and
director of the Heilbrunn Center for Population and
Family Health at Columbia University's Mailman
School of Public Health, has been named dean of the
University of New Hampshire's School of Health and
Human Services. He begins his duties July 1.
"The appointment of Jim McCarthy cannot have come
at a better time for the School of Health and Human
Services at the university," notes David Hiley, provost
and vice president for academic affairs. "The school is
at an exciting juncture in its development — the
renovation of Pettee Hall, the new Institute for Health
Policy and Practice and, soon, an announcement of the
McKerley Endowed Chair in health economics. Dr.
McCarthy brings energy and proven leadership for
these and other important initiatives. We are delighted
