But all feel it's beenworth every minute, because they will graduate withreal-world experience instead.George Miaoulis, Jr., visiting professor of marketing atUNH's Whittemore School of Business and Economics,says "when they finish in May they will have the skillsto walk right into a marketing department andcontribute substantively from day one. That's our goal,and I think this group is well on the way to meeting it.Our students will be one year ahead in terms of real-world experience compared to other graduates lookingfor that first job."The Whittemore School's marketing department iscommitted to providing experience-based education,giving graduates a competitive advantage in jobhunting, he added.Miaoulis organized students in the hands-on marketingworkshop into teams to research and design a fullmarketing plan -- including analysis of corporateculture, sales competition, product strengths andweaknesses, marketing strategy and more -- for two realcompanies. Team leader Jeremy Chapman of Weare andnine classmates are working on a marketing plan forHematech, Inc., a Westport, Conn., developer andmanufacturer of human polyclonal antibodytherapeutics. Students presented a first-draftmarketing plan to company executives April 3.Both teams feel they have made a real contribution totheir assigned company."I think we raised some issues that they had not thoughtof, in terms of marketing," says Chapman. "We all havedone a lot of research, educating ourselves about theirproducts, and our market analysis is solid. I expectthem to adopt a lot of our recommendations."Everyone on both teams is also impressed with howmuch work the advanced course has been. Jill Stowellof Revere, Mass., recalled that teams started holdingtwo-hour strategy sessions more than two weeks beforeclasses officially opened in January. They got a jump onthe work load and made it possible to rotate everyonethrough assignments, giving each student experience inall the skills needed to complete a full marketing plan.Miaoulis estimates that each team is handling the workload of a three- or four-person marketing staff. Studentshave discovered that some information is more elusivethan expected. Wheeler noted, for example, that"identifying the competition -- even trying to discoverwhether there is any -- was not easy. We're teachingeach other as we go." Chapman said it was a challengefor his team to understand Hematech's sophisticatedmedical product line.In May, these graduating seniors will deliverprofessional-level, comprehensive final marketingreports to company executives that feature company-specific strategies tailored to individual products, plusindustry analyses and growth projections.As Kristy Hemsley of Montréal, Québec, notes, "I don'tknow of another program where I could graduate with aportfolio like this.
