Alaboratory school is one with both an early care andeducation mission and an academic mission. Childrenattending the center, and the UNH students working atthe center, benefit from the highly trained teaching staffand from the family studies faculty. Lora James, interimdirector of the UNH center, says teachers at the CSDCdo a lot of outreach into the community, as well as withvisitors on-site."I've learned so much," says Cormier, who received herdegree in family studies with a nursery school-kindergarten concentration from UNH in 1990. "Ialways felt deep down that I wanted to share myexperiences. It can be frustrating as an educator becauseit's hard to find information specific to three-year-olds. Ilike being a resource. It's like a roller coaster ride. Childrenare supposed to go through these developmentalchanges, but all the adults in a child's life need to worktogether."Wendie Adam, child development and educationmanager for Strafford County Head Start, says whenher teachers consistently requested additional trainingon how to work with three-year-olds, she knew tocontact the CSDC."We like to use community resources whevever wecan," says Adam, "and UNH's CSDC is always willingto share its expertise.
