Department of Transportation commissionerand Governor's Advisory Committee on IntermodalTransportation approved the $1.8 million in CongestionMitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) ImprovementProgram funds, which will be used to reconstruct andenhance the Main Street corridor through campus,expand the rail station, expand campus shuttle serviceand support the regional CNG refueling station."The university is working cooperatively with theregion and the state of New Hampshire to improve thetransportation system and reduce air quality andcongestion impacts," says Stephen Pesci, specialprojects manager with UNH Parking andTransportation."These projects will help us reduce emissions and worktowards improving air quality measurements," Pescisays. "In the last nine months, UNH has beenrecommended for or been granted more than $2.9million in new transportation funding, including stateand federal monies. This project will benefit both the townand the UNH community and will provide for awonderful gateway to the downtown," says JimCampbell, Durham town planner.Funding includes $504,000 to reconstruct and improvethe Main Street corridor through campus. The totalproject cost is estimated at $630,000. The project callsfor the reconstruction of Main Street from Pettee BrookLane to the edge of campus to permit bi-directionaltraffic, bicycle, pedestrian and safety improvements,crosswalk upgrades and landscaping.UNH has received $652,000 to develop an expandedrail platform; renovate the interior and exterior of thestation to include an indoor waiting space; andconstruct bus access to the platform area with improvedpedestrian access around the station. The total projectcost is estimated at $815,000.The state approved $360,000 toward the purchase ofthree campus shuttles and funding for two years ofoperating assistance to expand campus shuttle service.The total project cost is estimated at $450,000.The state approved $300,000 to expand the plannedfueling station and purchase of CNG fueled UNH fleetvehicles. Transportation Projects

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire
and the town of Durham will receive more than $1.8
million in federal funds to improve transportation and
air quality on campus and in Durham.
The N.H. Department of Transportation commissioner
and Governor's Advisory Committee on Intermodal
Transportation approved the $1.8 million in Congestion
Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Improvement
Program funds, which will be used to reconstruct and
enhance the Main Street corridor through campus,
expand the rail station, expand campus shuttle service
and support the regional CNG refueling station.
"The university is working cooperatively with the
region and the state of New Hampshire to improve the
transportation system and reduce air quality and
