Poet, editor, translator,storyteller and father of what he calls “the expressive men'smovement,” Bly remains one of the most debated American artistsof the last 50 years. After translating Norwegian poetry intoEnglish on a Fulbright grant in 1956, he started a literary magazinefor poetry translation that introduced major poets who were notknown in the United States. In 1966, Bly co-founded AmericanWriters Against the Vietnam War, and when he won the NationalBook Award for “The Light Around the Body,” he contributed theprize money to the Resistance.Bly's recent work includes his second large prose book, “The Sibling Society,” which is thesubject of nationwide discussion; “Morning Poems,” a collection named for William Stafford'spractice of writing a poem each morning that revisits the western Minnesota farm country ofBly's boyhood; and “The Maiden King: The Reunion of Masculine and Feminine” incollaboration with Marion Woodman.
