Electricity and telecommunication network providers operate in a turbulent period. The market is open for competition and the customer demand is changing tremendously, facing the network providers with a huge challenge. In this thesis efficient algorithms are developed for tactical planning of those networks. These algorithms generate fairly accurate solutions within reasonable computation times. In this chapter the background and motivation of the thesis is presented as well as the focus of the research
