C.Speech Festival, was EmmetsburgJunior College. Dordt's participationwas limited with entries only indrama, ogatory, discussion, and inter-pretive reading. Other divisions wereradio, after dinner, and extemporane-ous speaking. Since the event wasof a festival nature rather than com-petitive, the participants were notranked. Outstanding participants ineach division were recognized; how-ever, Dord t's entrants failed to place.De Boer AcceptsAppointment to CalvinPeter P. It's not too late to discov-er that Dordt was and is more thana racetrack for grades. It is hightime that we, especially we who planto graduate, realize that Dordt's edu-cational values aren't limited to ordefined by report cards and creditsheets. Leaving Dordt without asense of other educational values andwithout the ability to use the Wordfor answering a lifetime of questionsis inexcusable. For Dordt offers herevery student this sense and abilityfor the assimilating.While the Fever MountsThere is a fever astir and rising to an even 'higher degree thanour campus spring fever. The patients are exchanging symptoms.only to discover that the diagnosis is the same for all: a highlycontagious case of fever caused by the imminence of exams. Inmany cases drugs will help; in some there is an allergy to drugs;and for a few cases medical science has yet found no cure. Andvery soon the fever will break to reveal for some a new brave, andhealthy world and for others an altogether sickly one.While the fever mounts we can take a dose of consolationfrom Harvard history professor, Oscar Handlin. In the MayAtlantic he has written an article entitled "Are the Co-lieges KHl-ing Education?" The item is an appealing one which due to itspotential as a circulating student petition might ·hold high bid atmany a college campus auction. And why such an item of appeal?Our able spokesman contends that colleges are dealing educa-tion a death blow. Their striking ax is "the grade that an incom-prehensible marking system will grind out." The fatal blow is be-ing inflicted upon even the best institutions and students. And ourcampus is not immune; here too we find "the anxiety of involve-ment in a mass competition."But you say the competitive spirit is a spur to excellence. Andso it is. Yet Handlin would warn against becoming "harnessed tothe treadmill of the examination." Grade scores and credits findno place in his ideal educational institution; ,they were necessaryonly in the disciplinary institutions of the past. Per harps we doneed a checkup-our competitive spirit does seem harnessed 'to thetreadmill, And in the feverish last weeks: of studies and activitieswe are apt to forget the other than competitive values to cur edu-cation at Dordt,We are given more than "an admirable training in the tech-niques of the correct answer." If Dordt's atmosphere has becomeand will remain one of stifling, harnessed competition, then theblame lies with us students. Both classes and extra-curricularactivities are directed toward giving us free reign to seek answerswhich are not known burt must be discovered. Our minds havebeen exposed to the thinking of others, have 'been prompted toprobe beyond the limits of what is handed to us. And in all ourseeking and probing we have access to that infallible Criterion ofall thought.B.B.BIOLOGY INSTRUCTORRECEIVES SCHOLARSHIPStanley Boertje, instructor in Biolo-gy, received notification this pastweek that he was chosen to receive aMacbride Scholarship for study at theIowa Lakeside Laboratory at LakeOkoboji. The scholarship is applica-ble for graduate work to be doneduring the first term of the summersession, extending from JUIle 11through July 13.The State University of Iowa makessuch grants available for one termat a time; therefore, according toBoertje, the possibility that the schol-arship may be renewed for the secondterm is a real one.Science and Math InstructorsAttend Academy of ScienceMarvin De Young, Ted Sjoerdsma,and Stanley Boer tje, instructors inthe science department of Dcrdt Col-lege, recently attended the SouthDakota Academy of Science meetingsheld at the University of South Da-kota, Vermillion.On Friday, May 4, the instructorslistened to reports given by studentsconcerning research done during thepast year in South Dakota high schoolsand colleges. Mr. De Young servedon a planning committee for the col-legiate section of the Academy.In the evening all three teachers at-tended the annual banquet.Mr. De Young returned to the acad-emy on Saturday morning and stayeduntil its adjournment Saturday noon.In the afternoon Mr. De Young at-tended the luncheon meeting of theSioux Valley Section of the AmericanChemists Society. At this meetingDr. Alberty from the University ofWisconsin gave a lecture on the tern-perature jump method for measuringvery fast reactions of proteins.At the business meeting followingthe lecture, Mr. De Young was re-elected secretary-treasurer of the sec-tion.Mr. De Young would like to encour-age Dordt students to consider thepossibility of presenting papers at thecollegiate section of the Academy ofScience.Page Three THE DORDT DIAMOND Thursday, May 17, 1962In an attempt to promote racial equality, there is being sought in Congressa bill which would require a sixth grade education as the criterion for the rightto vote. This bill would help the Negro who is often denied the voting privi-lege. This course of action immediately suggests a number of problems. Therearises a concern for the respective rights of the states and those of the federalgovernment. We are reminded of the original Constitution (Ar-ticle I, Section2) which left voting requirements up to the states. The problem is spurredonward when those in the Democratic administration wish to pass a law whichis seemingly unconstitutional.Underlying this problem there seems to be the old maxim that "the endjustifies the means." This idea originates from the Florentine statesman,Nlccolo Machiavelli, who believedthat any means, however unscrupu-lous, might be employed to attainany desired end. Applied to the caseabove, it would mean that the valueof the attained end, equality of vot-ing, was such as to warrant the pricepaid in the means by which it wasattained, the disregard of the princi-ple of States' Rights. This theory,then, justifies the use of any means aslong as it fulfills a worthy end.This theory is prevalent elsewherein politics, too. It is evident in elec-tions, in political appointments and inother legislative acts. It seems asthough there is a progressive declinein governmental morality. It is los-ing its true distinctiveness and itsresponsibility to the common individ-ual. This is lamentable.Demosthenes, the Greek, also warn-ed his fellow citizens of the decayof distinctiveness and the growth ofvenality. The present deterioration,however, is not con.fined only to ourgovernment. It reverberates through-out "our own" Christian society aswell. It seems as if we care littleas to what kind of means we use toreach our lofty goals.We have seen fit to establish aunique Christian educational system.A praise-worthy goal. But I wonderif the means in which it is maintain-ed is always so scrupulous. Are ourteachers adequately prepared for theirdask? Or, do we hope that the Dy-namic Core in which all things evolvewill hold things in their propercourse?Our discussion has religious over-tones. It would 'seem as though trueChristian distinctiveness would char-acterize our institutions. But, it ismissing. We delight in wallowingin the morass of conformity and medi-ocrity. Much of public interest con-cerns Richard Burton and Liz Taylorwhich has infiltrated the news adnauseam. Bartender jargon must ac-company our plans for a party. This,however, is characteristic of our age.The age in which we are livingmay turn out to be one of the "greatcnal lenges" which Arnold J. Toynbee,the historian, says determine thegreatness of a people. If we meetthe challenge, we will continue toby Jack Kramer~lim~. In doing so, we must keepIII mind a deep sense of responsibility,so that we may justifiably maintaina well-ordered society.SPIRNG DRIVE PROGRESSESNeal Boersma, head of the 1962Dordt Spring Drive, recently releaseddrive results as of April 25. Boersmastated that forty-two area churcheshad reported and that their contribu-tions amounted to $43,505.73. Furtherstatistics show that of a total 3,343families, included in the 42 churches,2,611 families have donated, a per-centage of 78.1. Mr. Boersma com-mented, "This definitely shows thatour people are supporting their col-lege."Added impetus was given thedri ve by Sioux Center businessmenwho contributed a remarkable $17,~348, bringing the total drive receiptsto $60,753.73. Boersma added that39 churches have yet to report. HaanSince 1959, Haan has been OCCUPyMIng the office of the president. AsPresident, Haan naturally has a planfor Dor dt College. He has an idea,which he has shared with many, ofwhat he would like Dordt College tobecome. He envisions Dordt Collegeas becoming "a strong four-year liber-al arts college drawing students pri-marily frr-rn west of the MississippiRiver, but also from the entire de-nomination." These students, con-tinues Haan, should be drawn toDordt College because of "the type ofcollege life-campus life-which wehave here, by the special social, cul-tural, religious benefits that are offer-ed here."Part of Haan's projected plan isbeing realized. A Music-Administra-tion building is now being erected.But this is only a beginning. In thefall of this year, a dormitory provid-ing housing for one hundred sixtystudents will be built. A dining hallcanab le of seating 340 students is alsoplanned for this fall. As the enro'll-rnent continues to grow over theyears, a science building, a librarybu ild ing, more dormitories, a studentunion, and a physical education plantwill be erected. All this, says Haanto provide the college student withthose "special social, cultural reli-gious benefits." ,The faculty will also be enlarged.Two men will be added next year.No less than six men will be addedin 1963.This is the projected future o.fDordd College. The Music-Administra-tion building is only a beginning. Itmarks the push forward. It is anotherstep forward in satisfying the "realneed" for Christian higher educationin the midwest.Dordt College certainly has a fu-ture. To say the least, an interestingone.students as President Haan, was ap-pointed to an enlarged steering com-mittee organized for the purpose ofestablishing a midwestern Christianjunior college. The action of thiscommittee led to the formation of asociety of which Haan was electedvice-president.When the school, known as the Mid-west Christian Junior College, openedin the fall of 1955, Haan was the vice-president of the board and a memberof the Education Committee. As amember of this committee, he was in-fluential in the formation of a build-ing program and a curriculum.Two years later, in 1957, Haan wasappointed as Acting President for atwo-year term. Haan held this positionalong with his pastorate at the FirstChristian Reformed Church in SiouxCenter.Bernard J. Haan was born in Sully,Iowa in 1917, a member of a familyof fifteen. At the age of three, hisparents moved to Orange City, Iowa,where Haan received one year of ele-mentary education before his familymoved again-to Grand Rapids, Mich-igan. It was here that Haan receivedthe remainder of his education, in-cluding Calvin College and Seminary.In 1942, Haan was ordained into theministry.In 1945, the now Rev. Haan accept-ed the First Christian ReformedChurch of Sioux Center, Iowa, as' hischarge. It was while laboring herethat in 1951 he first became interest-ed in what now is' Dordt College. Hehas been associated with Dordt Col-lege both in thought and actuality forsome eleven years.In 1951 Rev.
