I understand t h a t  a g rea t  deal  of fauna1 material w a s  recovered, and analys is  is now nearing completion by David Horton, t h e  Osteologist  from the  Austral ian I n s t i t u t e  of Aboriginal  Studies.  Richard Wright i s  i n  the process of a s sess ing  t h e  excavated l i t h i c  mater ia l .  Harry Lourandos, from Sydney Univers i ty ,  i s  continuing h i s  work i n  the Western D i s t r i c t  of Vic to r i a ,  wi th  excavation of two rock s h e l t e r s  i n  t h a t  area.  During t h e  p a s t  few months, the Relics Office has undertaken a j o i n t  p ro jec t  with t h e  Austral ian I n s t i t u t e  of Aboriginal  Studies  i n  the  Grampians area.  The object  of the  exerc i se  is t o  make very d e t a i l e d  recordings of the  rock a r t  i n  one of the  major rock s h e l t e r s ,  and to  complement t h i s  recording work wi th  archaeological  inves t igat ions .  The de ta i l ed  recording of the  pa in t ings  w i l l  not  only provide a f i r s t - c l a s s  record of the  ex tan t  pa in t ings ,  bu t  w i l l  a l s o  a s s i s t  i n  monitoring the de te r io ra t ion  of the  rock ar t  wi th  time. On the  archaeological  s ide ,  i t  is hoped t h a t  some determination of t h e  age of the  rock a r t  there  w i l l  be forthcoming. The r e s u l t s  t o  date ,  ind ica te  t h a t  the s i t e  was occupied by people wi th  a backed blade technology. P. Sutherland, Curator of Minerals a t  the Museum, is analysing,  f o r  t r ace  elements, pumice from the FCS Lapi ta  s i t e  a t  Talasea, New Br i t a in ,  t o  examine the p o s s i b i l i t y  t h a t  the  volcanic ash seal ing the s i t e  o r ig ina ted  from the  eruption of M t  Witori on Cape Hoskins a t  c.2600 b.p. M r  D. Anson, Dept. Anthropology, University of Sydney, i s  proceeding with analyses of Lapita pottery from Watom Is land,  including Meyer's mater ia l  as well  as my uwn (Meyer 'S ma te r i a l  from Germany). J.
