t h i s  a u t h o r ' s  o p i n i o n  t h a t  t h e  main d i s t i n g u i s h i n g  f a c t o r  
b e t w e e n  t h e  two i s  wha t  D e l l  Hymes h a s  c a l l e d  t h e  e l e m e n t  
o f  l t t r a d i t i o n a l i z i n g t l  (Hymes 1 9 7 5 ) .  I n  a  r e a l i s t i c ,  non- 
j a r g o n  l a d e n  s e n s e ,  t h i s  means t h a t  f o l k l o r e  i s / c a n  b e  
p o p u l a r  c u l t u r e  t h a t  h a s ,  t h r o u g h  a  p r o c e s s  o f  r e p e t i t i o n ,  
f o r m a l i z a t i o n ,  o r  a b s o r b t i o n ,  b e e n  i n f u s e d  i n t o  t h e  mind 
a n d  s p i r i t  o f  t h e  f o l k .  To t h o s e  s c h o l a r s  c r i t i c a l  o f  
t h i s  i n c l u s i o n  o f  p o p u l a r  c u l t u r e  i n  f o l k l o r e ,  I mus t  
p o i n t  o u t  t h a t - - i f  a c c e p t e d  a t  f a c e  v a l u e - - t h i s  i n c l u s i o n  
i s  r e a l l y  a  r a t h e r  t r a d i t i o n a l  a p p r o a c h ,  f o r  i s  f o l k l o r e  
n o t  t h o s e  i t e m s  which  b e l o n g  t o  t h e  c o l l e c t i v e  u n c o n s c i o u s ,  
t h e  c o l l e c t i v e  i d e n t i t y  o f  t h e  f o l k ?  Of w h a t  u s e  would 
a  marchen  b e  i f  t h e r e  w e r e  n o t  some c o l l e c t i v e  a c c e p t a n c e  
a n d  u n d e r s t a n d i n g  o f  t h e  fo rm and  i t s  c o n t e n t ?  I t  i s  
t h e  same w i t h  Amer ican  p o p u l a r  c u l t u r e  a n d  f o l k l o r e .  
When e x i s t i n g  a s  an i t e m  o f  p o p u l a r  c u l t u r e  a l o n e  
( a  f a d ,  m o v i e ,  t e l e v i s i o n  c o m m e r c i a l ) ,  t h e r e  i s  no  i n f u s i o n  
i n t o  t h e  mind o f  t h e  f o l k ;  i t  h a s  n o t  y e t  b e e n  t r a d i t i o n a -  
l i z e d .  Yet o n c e  t h a t  p r o c e s s  o f  t r a d i t i o n a l i z a t i o n  h a s  
t a k e n  p l a c e ,  t h e  i t e m  s l i p s  a c c r o s s  t h a t  f i n e  l i n e  o f  
d i s t i n c t i o n  a n d  b e c o m e s ,  I b e l i e v e ,  a  p a r t  o f  Amer ican  
f o l k l o r e .  
E x a m p l e s  o f  t h i s  t y p e  o f  f o l k  a c c e p t a n c e  a r e  e v e r y w h e r e .  
A l t h o u g h  t h e  movie  c l a s s i c  Gone Wi th  The Wind i s  n o t ,  
by i t s e l f ,  an i t e m  o f  f o l k l o r e ,  who c a n  d e n y  t h a t  t h e  
q u o t e  f r o m  t h e  f i l m  " F r a n k l y  S c a r l e t ,  I d o n ' t  g i v e  a  damn,"  
h a s  n o t  become p a r t  o f  o u r  f o l k  l e x i c o n ?  I n  a  l a r g e r  
s e n s e ,  i t  i s  t h i s  body  o f  i n f o r m a t i o n ,  c u l l e d  f r o m  t r a d i -  
t i o n a l  f o l k  a n d  p o p u l a r  s o u r c e s ,  t h a t  c o n s t i t u t e s  o u r  
A m e r i c a n  i d e n t i t y .  I t  i s ,  f o r  e x a m p l e ,  t h e  "Amer ican  
Way" o f  t h e  Red C r o s s .  What i s  meant  by t h e  "Amer ican  
Waytt i s  n e v e r  d e l i n e a t e d ,  y e t  we a c c e p t  i t  w i t h o u t  q u e s t i o n ,  
f o r  o u r  c o l l e c t i v e  b o d y  o f  i n f o r m a t i o n  t e l l s  us w h a t  i t  
means: n e i g h b o r s  h e l p i n g  n e i g h b o r s ,  a i d  t o  t h e  down a n d  
o u t ,  b e i n g  a  good  guy .  I t  i s  t h a t  i n f o r m a t i o n  w h i c h  we 
t a c i t l y  a c c e p t  a n d  e x p e c t  o t h e r s  t o  know i f  t h e y  a r e  t o  
b e  i n c l u d e d  i n  o u r  c l u b ,  t h e  A m e r i c a n  f o l k  g r o u p .  
P r i m a r y  among t h e  A m e r i c a n  body  o f  i n f o r m a t i o n  a r e  
o u r  s o n g s .  Due a t  l e a s t  i n  p a r t  t o  t h e  m u s i c  l ' i n d u s t r y , l l  
we a r e  bombarded  f r o m  c r a d l e  t o  g r a v e  w i t h  s o n g s  o f  a l l  
t y p e .  O c c a s i o n a l l y  t h e  l i n k  b e t w e e n  p o p u l a r  c u l t u r e  a n d  
f o l k l o r e  becomes s o  o b s c u r e d  t h a t  t h e  p o p u l a r  c u l t u r e  
i s  a l l  b u t  l o s t .  I f  one  w h i s t l e d  t h e  m e l o d y ,  mos t  A m e r i c a n s  
w o u l d  r e c o g n i z e  t h e  c h i l d r e n ' s  s o n g  p a r o d y  "Be k i n d  t o  
y o u r  web f o o t e d  f r i e n d s ,  f o r  a  d u c k  may be  s o m e b o d y ' s  
( m o t h e r / b r ~ t h e r / u n c l e ) . ~ ~  B u t  few c o u l d  s t a t e  t h a t  t h e  t u n e  
i s  b a s e d  on  S t a r s  a n d  S t r i p e s  F o r e v e r  b y  J o h n  P h i l l i p  
Sousa.  Hence t h e  i n f u s i o n  o f  p o p u l a r  c u l t u r e  a n d  f o l k l o r e .  
A m e r i c a n  f i l m - m a k e r s  d u r i n g  t h e  f i r s t  h a l f  o f  t h i s  
c e n t u r y  were  p a r t i c u l a r l y  a d e p t  a t  u t i l i z i n g  and  c r e a t i n g  
p o r t i o n s  o f  t h e  A m e r i c a n  b e l i e f  s y s t e m  t h r o u g h  t h e i r  m o v i e s .  
Once a g a i n ,  s o n g  p l a y e d  an  i m p o r t a n t  r o l e  i n  t h e  c r e a t i o n  
a n d  m a i n t e n a n c e  o f  mood, a n d  i n  d o i n g  s o  became a n o t h e r  
p a r t  o f  o u r  f o l k  i n f o r m a t i o n .  Songs l i k e  "As Time Goes 
By," f o r m  t h e  f i l m  C a s a b l a n c a ,  q u i c k l y  became m a j o r  i t e m s  
o f  p o p u l a r  c u l t u r e ,  w i t h  a s s o c i a t e d  f o l k  i d e a s  s u r r o u n d i n g  
them.  The s a y i n g  ' I P l a y  i t  a g a i n ,  Sam," w h i c h  was a l l e g e d l y  
s a i d  b y  Humphrey B o g a r t  t o  p i a n o  p l a y e r  D o o l e y  W i l s o n  
i n  t h e  f i l m ,  was n e v e r  u t t e r e d .  Y e t  due i n  p a r t  t o  t h e  
p o p u l a r i t y  o f  t h e  f i l m  and  t h e  song ,  p e o p l e  c r e d i t e d  B o g a r t  
w i t h  t h e  q u o t e  w h i c h  l i k e  " F r a n k l y  S c a r l e t ,  I d o n ' t  g i v e  
a  damn," e n t e r e d  o u r  f o l k  v o c a b u l a r y .  
T e l e v i s i o n  p l a y e d  an e f f i c a c i o u s  r o l e  i n  m a i n t a i n i n g  
a n d  c r e a t i n g  t h i s  p o p u l a r / f o l k  l i n k .  I n  t h e  e a r l y  1950s ,  
a  w h o l e  g e n e r a t i o n  g rew up  w i t h  t h e s e  o l d  m o v i e s  a n d  s o n g s  
a s  p a r t  o f  t h e i r  l i v e s .  As a  c h i l d  o f  t h e  t i m e s  i n  New 
Y o r k  C i t y ,  I r e c a l l  WOR t e l e v i s i o n \  " M i l l i o n  D o l l a r  M o v i e u  
w h i c h  w o u l d  show t h e  same f i lm t w i c e  a  d a y  f o r  a  week, 
a n d  t h r e e  t i m e s  on  Sunday,  f o r  a  t o t a l  o f  15 s h o w i n g s  
b e f o r e  s w i t c h i n g  t o  a  new m o v i e  f o r  t h e  n e x t  week. W i t h  
t h i s  k i n d  o f  s a t u r a t i o n ,  an e a r l y  a s s o c i a t i o n  w i t h  t h e  
s o n g s  o f  I r v i n g  B e r l i n  and  George  G e r s h w i n ,  o r  t h e  s t y l i n g s  
o f  s u c h  e c l e c t i c  p e r f o r m e r s  as C l i f f  " U k u l e l e  I k e "  Edwards  
was n o r m a l .  M o s t  7 o r  8  y e a r  o l d s  i n  my n e i g h b o r h o o d  
c o u l d  s i n g  a n y  number o f  A l i c e  F a y e  o r  F r e d  A s t a i r e  s o n g s .  
These  t u n e s  became o u r  t r a d i t i o n a l  h e r i t a g e .  They w e r e  
a s  much a  p a r t  o f  o u r  f o l k  m u s i c  as  was s t r e e t  c o r n e r  
doo-wop s i n g i n g ,  o r  m o t h e r ' s  l u l l a b i e s .  I t  i s  n o  s u r p r i s e  
t o  f i n d ,  t h e r e f o r e ,  a  w h o l e  g e n e r a t i o n  o f  y o u n g  a d u l t s  
s t e e p e d  i n  t h i s  e r a  o f  A m e r i c a n  song .  L i k e w i s e ,  i t  i s  
n o  s u r p r i s e  t o  f i n d  r e c o r d  c o m p a n i e s  p r o d u c i n g  a l b u m s  
w h i c h  f e a t u r e  t u n e s  by  G e r s h w i n  a l o n g s i d e  o n e s  b y  B l i n d  
B l a k e  o r  M i s s i s s i p p i  J o h n  H u r t ,  f o r  t o  t h i s  g e n e r a t i o n  
o f  A m e r i c a n s ,  t h i s  i s  a l l  f o l k  m u s i c .  I t  i s  o u r  i n t e n t i o n

o n  t h e  m a r k e t .  P a r t i c u l a r l y  i m p r e s s i v e  a r e  t h e  t e c h n i c a l  
a b i l i t i e s  o f  s e v e r a l  E u r o p e a n  g u i t a r i s t s ,  m o s t  n o t a b l y
