Ten years ago about 81 percent of the irrigated land in the United States was
surface irrigated. Surface irrigated area has increased gradually, but
sprinkler irrigated area has increased faster so as to gain about 1 percent
of the total area each year. Of all irrigated land in 1975, surface irrigated
areas comprised about 75 percent; in 1979, only 68 percent.
