Recent research on Grids has largelyfocused on issues of performance, scalability, and stan-dardization. Yet, little has been done on aspects ofintelligence and adaptability. To this end, agent andmulti-agent technologies provide a promising approachto make Grid applications and solutions smarter, moreflexible, and adaptable.In more detail, two kinds of questions arise in thisresearch area. On the one hand, technical questionsconcerning the Grid have to be solved, including ad-vanced Grid architectures, semantically enhanced ser-vice descriptions, and the specification of resources.On the other hand, issues related to autonomy, collab-oration, and economic models need to be treated. Keyresearch topics here are market-based allocation andscheduling of resources, pricing, payment, automatednegotiation, market mechanisms, self-organization andlearning, engineering of Grid marketplaces and manyothers.This special issue of the Multiagent and Grid Sys-tems journal is dedicated to the topic of Smart GridTechnologies & Market Models. A workshop, namedidentically, has recently been carried out at the 5thInternational Conference on Autonomous Agents andMulti-Agent Systems in Utrecht, July 2005 and the con-tributions in this special issue are extended and revisedversions of a number of the best papers from this event.Specifically, this special issue comprises six contri-butions. Topics cover virtual organizations for the Gridbased on agent technology go over market mechanismsfor combinatorial resource scheduling, and architec-tures for decentralized economic models in Grids.The first contribution by J. Patel et al. deals with vir-tual organizations (VO) for the Grid. The main contri-bution of this article is the introduction of highly scal-able agent-based virtual organizations for Grid appli-cations. Having introduced agent-based VOs, the au-thors show how to deal with uncertain information andmonitoring the status of quality-of-service measures invirtual organizations on the Grid.In the second contribution, Peter Gradwell et al. de-velop an alternative method for distributed multi-itemresource allocation. Since combinatorial auctions havean inherent high complexity, the authors define multi-ple distributed single item auctions (MDAs) as a novelapproach. They then use a simulation setup in order toevaluate the complexity and bidding behaviour of theparticipants and present an evaluation of their results.Contribution number three, by Albayrak and co-authors, comprises advanced grid management soft-ware for seamless services. The authors introducethe notion of Advanced Grid Management Softwarefor multi-modal access, security, and accounting andadvanced messaging for managing Grid applications.AGMS shall provide Grid operators with an additionalmanagement and access level on top of existing gridmanagement software tools.                                                                    236                              The fourth contribution, by Michael Reinicke andco-authors, provides an evaluation of service selectiontechniques in service oriented computing networks.They compare several approaches of service selectionmethods in order to find out how to determine potentialcandidate instances in service oriented architectures. Aparticular focus lies in the design of a decentralizedservice selection approach and its comparison with acentralized baseline algorithm.In the fifth article Oscar Ardaiz et al. develop anarchitectural framework for the incorporation of decen-tralized economic models in application layer networksand Grids. The main issue on which they focus is thecomposition of a middleware that is able to handle de-centralized structures in allocating Grid resources froma technical perspective.The final article, by Torsten Eymann et al., providesan introduction to Catallaxy-based Grid markets. Thenotion Catallaxy – stemming from F.A. v. Hayek –refers to bilateral bargaining and thereby the estab-lishment of a spontaneous order in market scenarios.The main contribution of the paper is the design ofa decentralized Catallaxy-based Grid resource alloca-tion mechanism. The importance of the considerationof decentralized mechanisms stems from the fact thatin scenarios with large numbers of traders, centralizedmechanisms suffer a bottleneck syndrome while de-centralized approaches are mostly restricted to localoptima.In summary, this special issue comprises a varietyof articles that treat different aspects of the problem ofallocating resources in highly distributed and volatileGrid markets.
