Almost every collection yields new taxaof Gomphillaceae. The genus Gyalideopsis,established nearly 30 years ago with four spe-cies (Vezda 1972), now includes more than 70taxa. The only genuine Gyalectidium in themonograph of Santesson (1952) was the type G.filicinum, but presently the genus comprises noless than 29 species (Ferraro et al., in prep.). Asimilar trend is found in Calenia, in which 12taxa were described in the last years (Sérusiaux1978; Vezda 1979; Hartmann 1996; Lücking1997).This paper deals with a new species of Caleniafrom Papua New Guinea, belonging to the coregroup of the genus and related to C. phyllogena(Müll. Scale = 1mm.Description: Thallus epiphyllous, continuous, 5-15 mm across, finely verrucose, pale greenishgrey, verrucae whitish, encrusted with calciumoxalate crystals and densely furnished with sterilesetae; setae whitish, 1.5-2.0 mm long, basally 35-50 µm broad. Phycobiont a species ofChlorococcaceae, cells 5-8 µm diam.Apothecia immersed-erumpent butcomparatively low, rounded to slightly irregularin outline, 0.4-0.8 mm diam.; disc yellow toorange yellow; margin thin but distinct,prominent, whitish. Para-physes 0.5-0.7 µm thick, richly branched andanastomosing; asci ellipsoid-ovate, 60-80 ´ 20-30 µm. Ascospores 2-4 per ascus, vermiform, 9-13-septate, colourless, 60-85 ´ 9-13 µm.Hyphophores abundant, formed laminallyon the thallus surface between the sterile setae,acute, 0.3-0.5 mm long and basally 25-45 µmbroad, whitish. Diahyphae produced in asubapical, drop-shaped bunch, branchedthroughout, constricted at the septa; singlesegments fusiform, 7-15 ´ 2.5-3.0 µm; finalsegments elongate-fusiform (15-20 µm) tobacillar-filiform and then 0.07-0.1 µm broad.57TROPICAL BRYOLOGY 19 (2000)New species of foliicolous lichens VIINotes: Calenia flava is a very conspicuous taxondue to the densely setose thallus and the largeapothecia with yellow disc. The yellow colour isbest observed in freshly collected specimens buteventually disappears in old herbarium material.At first, we believed the rich material torepresent an aberrant form of Calenia phyllogena,but the latter occurs abundantly at the samelocality (to be distributed in Lücking: LICHENESFOLIICOLI EXSICCATI) and shows a numberof differences shared by other collections of thisspecies: sterile setae are usually absent or at leastrare, the apothecia are smaller (0.3-0.6 mm) andhigher, and the apothecial disc is pale yellowishgrey to almost whitish. Furthermore, theascospores are smaller on an average (up to 65µm long).With its large, low apothecia with yellowdisc, Calenia flava also resembles C. graphideaVain., but the latter has a less prominent, stronglyirregular apothecial margin and much smaller,5-7-septate ascospores.Calenia flava has the same hyphophoretype as the core group of Calenia, furtherincluding C. depressa Müll.
