(?, Holotype, EGR, Isotype G).Hanging on twigs of shrubs and also on thosefallen from the canopy of large trees. Stemspinnate, with few thecal branches often perpen-dicular to the stem. Leaves slightly imbricate,concave with 650 µm long and 4-500 µm wideasymmetric lobe. The lobe apex apiculato-mucronate, incurved. Lobe base rounded,crossing widely and regularly the stem. Lobulesmall, triangular, the keel never exceeds the 1/4length of the lobe. The keel forms a very sharp,60-90° sinus with the postical margin of the lobe.The apical tooth is formed by 1-3 cells in line,directed away 50-70° from the stem. Often asecond, short, 1 celled tooth is observable at thedistal base of apical tooth. The amphigastriaare orbicular, either incubous orsuccubous, very large, 5-600 µm indiameter, 5-6 times wider than the stem,apex bilobed to the 1/4 - 1/5 length ofamphigastria, lobi and sinus acute. Basecordate, attached to the stem in a deep,navel like sinus with large, overlappingauricles. Median cells both in the lobi andamphigastria are 8-22 µm long and 8-19µm broad, with large triangular,sometimes slightlynodulose thickenings. Stem brown, ap-proximately 100 µm thick, in transversalsection with 7 cortical and 8-9 medullarcells, with evenly thickened, yellowishbrown walls. Gametangia unknown.This striking new species by its huge,orbicular, auriculate amphigastria is notsimilar to any known Cheilolejeunea fromcontinental Africa. It shows some slightresemblance to the MadagascanStrepsilejeunea cordistipula Steph., butthe latter species has much longer (1/2lobe length), fusiform lobuli and blunt,rounded amphigastrium lobi. The wholetransitional appearance, withStrepsilejeunea like, acute lobus end andwith  Euosmolejeunea like, very largeamphigastria with cordate base supportSchuster’s (1963: 112) view, thatEuosmolejeunea andStrepsilejeunea  cannot be separated at generic level.Cheilolejeunea pocsii E.W. Already Tixier (1979)dicovered the affinity between D. aulaeand  D. tridenticulata. He based thedistinction of the latter species on thelobule teeth, which are extremely variablein our material and on the absence ofgemmiferous leaves.  Our materialcontains about 20 specimens with morethen 100 shoots. Only one shoot bearsone pair of gemmiferous leaves.
