In 2000 the author collected onRéunion, Mauritius and Rodrigues. The resultsof the exploration of the very poorly knownbryoflora of Rodrigues will be reported in aseparate paper, which is in preparation. In thepresent paper some new records for the bryoflorasof Réunion and Mauritius are reported. Thebryophyte collection of the 2000 excursion is upto now only partly examined, so further studieswill probably increase the number of interestingspecimens.Annotated list of speciesThe nomenclature of the species follows O’Shea(1999) for the mosses and Wigginton & Grolle(1996) for the liverworts. Voucher specimens arein the author’s personal herbarium. For specimenssent to specialists for determination orconfirmation, duplicates exist in their personalherbaria. Perold.In the East African Islands the species washitherto only known from Madagascar (Grolle1995). It is widely distributed in continentalAfrica (Wigginton & Grolle 1996).MusciAnomodon tristis (Ces.) Sull. & Lesq.Réunion: Cilaos NW, along the hiking trail tothe Col du Taibit in the area of Plaine des Fraises,c. 1800 m, on boulders in sparse forest;21.9.2000; herb. F. Müller R 728, conf. B.J.O’Shea.First certain record for Africa. In Africa it wasrecorded only by Potier de la Varde, from twolocalities in Kenya (see O’Shea 2000), but noherbarium material was located for thesecollections. Therefore O’Shea (2000) concludedthat it is most likely that the collections weremisidentified and belonged to A. pseudotristis,and  A. tristis was therefore excluded from thechecklist of the mosses of sub-Saharan Africa(O’Shea 1999). In the revision of the genus byGranzow-de la Cerda (1997) it was also notmentioned as occurring in Africa.Anomodon tristis shows a very scattereddistribution. It is known from Europe(Switzerland, Italy, Austria, the formerYugoslavia, Romania), Asia (eastern China,Japan, Taiwan, Himalayas, Russian Far East,Turkey), North, Central and South America,Hawaii (Düll 1985, Granzow-de la Cerda 1997,O’Shea in litt.).Brachymenium exile (Dozy & Molk.) Bosch. &Sande Lac.Mauritius: Black River Gorges National Park, c.2 km NW of le Petrin, c. 600 m, earthy slopesalong a path in rainforest; 4.10.2000; herb. F.Müller R 892.This species was just reported as new for Réunionby Müller (2000) and can now also reported asnew for Mauritius. In Réunion the species iswidely distributed, and many additional recordswas made on this island during the excursion in2000 by the author. In addition, it was found onRéunion in many places by the late T. Arts (Arts,in litt.).Calliergonella cuspidata (Hedw.) LoeskeMauritius: Curepipe, in the Botanical Garden, c.500 m, on wet soil in meadows; 2.10.2000; herb.F. Müller R 907.This species was recently reported from Ethiopiaas new for sub-Saharan Africa (Ignatov & Pavlov1998). The record in the Botanical Garden inMauritius rests most likely on introduction. Thespecies is widely distributed in the NorthernHemisphere and is known in the SouthernHemisphere from New Zealand, Australia andsouthern South America.Dicranella cardotii R. Br. ter. Ochyra.In Africa this species was hitherto only knownfrom the Republic of South Africa (O’Shea1999). It can now reported as new for the EastAfrican Islands. In sub-Saharan Africa the species was hitherto onlyknown from Cape Verde and Djibouti (O’Shea1999). It is known elsewhere from western andsouthern Europe, northern Africa, SouthwestAsia and Macaronesia (Düll 1985). Theoccurrence on Mauritius is well outside thehitherto known range and rests most likely on anintroduction. At the same site Calliergonellacuspidata was also found, another probablyintroduced species (see above).Syrrhopodon parasiticus (Brid.) Besch.Réunion: St-Philippe N, Sentier du Plle Trembleta little below Abri du Tremblet, c. 1000 m,mountain rainforest, on thin branches of trees;23.9.2000; herb. F. Müller R 906.First record for the Mascarenes. In Africa thespecies is known elsewhere from Cameroon,Madagascar and Uganda (O’Shea 1999). Thespecies shows a pantropical distribution.
