He is in agreement thata name should now be proposed for it in order that thegenus and species can be incorporated into his currentstudies.Opitzius Barr, new genusDescription: Epiphloeinae. Body of moderate size,rather slender and elongate.  Head, in dorsal view,rectangular, broader than long, flattened in front andslightly swollen dorsally; eyes large, situated lateral-ly, widely separated in front, finely faceted and witha broad, subtriangular, shallow emargination aboveantennal base; antennae 11-segmented with the threeterminal segments forming a loose and subflattenedclub; maxillary palpus with last segment subcylindri-cal, labial palpus smaller and slightly narrowedapically. Pronotum subquadrate, slightly longer thanbroad, with a rounded lateral lobe present behindmiddle; front, lateral and hind margins finely, butdistinctly cristate and continuous, front margin arc-uate, hind margin transverse; surface finely, denselycribrate, irregularly swollen and faintly undulatedacross middle; trichobothria and associated depres-sions not easily discernable. Scutellum  large, subtri-angular and sub-flattened. Elytra subparallel, gradu-ally narrowing to separately rounded apices; surfacewith basal third faintly, irregularly swollen andfaintly depressed across middle, basal two-thirds withdeep, densely and irregularly placed punctations,apical third shallowly punctate; epipleuron narrowand shortened, impunctate; united epipleural fold/elytral margin thickened below humerus, weaklycristate to middle and unmodified on apical half. Legsslender; front margin of protibia spinose; tarsal clawswith a lobed basal tooth; meso- and metatibia with aterminal spine; metatarsus with two apical pulvilli.Type species: Opitzius thoracicus Barr, new spe-cies.Notes: Features that separate this genus from allother New World epiphloeines involve the uniquedorsal cribrate condition and the continuous cristatedevelopment of the margins of the pronotum. Pronotum densely clothed withshort, erect and suberect, stiff black hairs; sides,viewed from above, emarginate behind front marginand lateral lobe.  Scutellum testaceous. Legs with fore coxae black and outer,basal area of profemora black; front margin of protibiabearing five tiny spines and a larger, triangularsubapical tooth.Ventral surface testaceous; procoxae and fronto-lateral area of mesosternum black. Abdomen withsternites 1-4 bearing recumbent, posterior directed,short, tan hairs, sternites 5 and 6 dissected, notavailable.  Body length 7.9 mm.Types: Holotype, female, from Brazil, Bahia, Encru-zuhada, XI-1974, M. Alvarenga (deposited in MZSP),and 1 male paratype, with same information (depos-ited in the W. F. Barr collection); 1 female paratype,labeled DPTO ZOOL UF-PARANA PARQUESOORETAMA BRASIL, 27/11/1967 - F. Oliviera(deposited in the IMLA); 1 male paratype from Brazil,Espiritu- Santu, Linhares, IX-1972, M. Alvarenga(deposited in the USNM) ; 2 female paratypes fromGuanabara, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, XII-1969, M.Alvarenga (deposited in the Weston Opitz collectionand the CASC); 1 female paratype, labeled Fry RioJano (deposited in the BMNH).Etymology: The term thoracicus makes referenceto the thorax of this species which is the mostimportant structure in the classification of this beetle.Notes: A considerable amount of variation, both colorand structural, occurs between the individuals of thetype series. The head of one specimen shows a distinctredness on the upper front, between the eyes.  On oneof the paratypes the elytra are apically black  and theothers have a transverse, pale, bisected marking tothe black condition.  Structurally, the spines on thefront margin of the protibia exhibit an unusualamount of variation, both between specimens andbetween legs of a specimen.
