The typespecies is Anthribus heros Fabricius 1801, by orig-inal designation and monotypy.Examination of three syntypes of A. heros inThe Zoological Museum in Copenhagen revealedall three specimens have been repaired at the pro-mesothoracic joint, and some body parts of at leastfour individuals of three different species arepresent.The specimens are all in the Sehstedt & Tonder-Lund collection, and have square, hand-writtenlabels reading “Guinea / Mus. S. & T.L. / Heros /Fabr.” Two are marked as males, one as a female,and each has a small square green pin label. Onemale bears a red printed “TYPE” label; however, itis not A. heros as currently understood. It is Phlo-eotragus hottentotus Schönherr 1839 (describedfrom the Cape of Good Hope), “subspecies” P. h.imhoffi Boheman, 1845 (described from Guinea).The second specimen, a female, is A. heros of almostall authors and is hereby designated lectotype. Thethird specimen is a composite: head and prothoraxare male P. gigas Fabricius, and the rest of the bodyis a female P. heros.The three species are distinguished as follows:P. heros has no pre-apical elytral tubercle, noextension of the lateral carina past the supracoxalsuture, no extension of the lateral carina into asubcarinal dark stripe, no lateral carinula, maleslack rounded sex tufts on the hind coxae, and haveshort recumbent setae on the antennae; P. hotten-totus has a pre-apical elytral tubercle, the lateralcarina continues forward almost to the pre-apicalgroove, the lateral carinula is present and isolatedfrom lateral carina, males have a trichobothrium (arounded tuft of setae in a pit) on each hind coxa, andshort recumbent setae on the antennae; P. gigasfits the description of P. heros above, except maleantennae have densely spaced, small, rounded scalesdorsally, becoming weakly peg-like ventrally, andin both sexes, the lateral carina of the prothoraxextends into the dark lateral stripe.– Barry D.
