Eine Deutsche Volkssage.The 1926 silent classic was directed by FW Murnau and stars Emil Jannings (Prof. Unrat in "The BlueAngel") as Mephisto. Goesta Ekman is Faust, the incomparable Camilla Horn an unforgettableGretchen. Lots of trick shots, Faust and Mephisto on a flying carpet, The Four Horsemen (three in this film), thesummoning of Mephisto etc., but rarely overdone. The architecture is quite stunning, a small medieval town with pointed gables and spires, narrow stairlike streets; the story begins and ends here. The story uses scenes and motifs from Marlowe, Goethe and the old Faust Book. It has a uniqueending, Faust joins Gretchen at the stake and is redeemed. Gretchen's infanticide is clearly presentedas an act committed in a state of mental confusion, the homeless young mother mistakes a snow driftfor a cradle. Her search for shelter recalls the biblical "there was no room for them in the inn" (Luke2,7). The wager whether Faust can be corrupted takes place between the Archangel and Mephisto. Goddoes not enter the picture. Mephisto wins, of course, technically anyway, but the pact is canceled by aforce stronger than pedantic legalism, the Archangel calls it LOVE. Geburtstag ist Gretchen zu einer Bewaehrungsstrafe verurteilt worden. Die24jaehrige Susanna Margaretha Brandt, deren tragisches Schicksal der Dichter im "Faust" verarbeitet hatte, warwenige Schritte von ihrem Elternhaus entfernt im Januar 1772 wegen Kindsmordes hingerichtet worden. In einemneuen Prozess nach heutigem Recht kam Roland Kern, Richter am hessischen Staatsgerichtshof, zu einemhumaneren Urteil: Zwei Jahre auf Bewaehrung. Er sprach ihr mildernde Umstaende zu. Gretchen sei "Vollwaise,Analphabetin und sexuell unerfahren" gewesen, als sie vom Diener eines hollaendischen Kaufmanns geschaendetwurde. Aus Angst vor dem Verlust ihrer Anstellung als Dienstmagd habe sie in Panik ihren Saeugling kurz nachder Geburt getoetet. Kern stimmte weiter milde, dass Gretchen ein umfassendes Gestaendnis ablegte und die Tatzutiefst bereute.(From TRANSATLANTIC COMMUNICATION NETWORK (TCN)).
