©	  2016	  Willie	  T	  Jones	  ALL	  RIGHTS	  RESERVED	  	  Baroco	  	  	  	  	  Willie	  T	  Jones	  	  	  	  	  Documents	  submiBed	  to	  the	  Faculty	  of	  the	  University	  of	  North	  Carolina	  at	  Chapel	  Hill	  in	  parMal	  fulﬁllment	  of	  the	  requirements	  for	  the	  degree	  of	  the	  Master	  of	  Fine	  Arts	  in	  the	  Department	  of	  Art”	  	  	  2016	  	  	  “Approved	  by”	  Mario	  Marzan,	  Roxana-­‐Perez	  Mendes,	  Hong-­‐An	  Truong,	  Mary	  Pardo	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  	  ArMst	  Statement 	   	   	   	  Slide	  1	  of	  2	  	  Shout	  out	  to	  old	  schools	  and	  old	  rules…uh	  New	  cats	  with	  new	  facts…uh	  I’m	  tryin	  to	  be	  the	  king…uh	  Retro	  Act,	  I’m	  just	  bringing	  back	  like	  Kobe	  Shaq	  Ruling	  Class,	  they	  looking	  down	  on	  me	  State	  of	  power,	  they	  trying	  to	  clown	  on	  me,	  You	  can	  turn	  up	  your	  nose	  high	  society	  Never	  gone	  turn	  down	  the	  homey	  	  	  Shit	  on	  me	  These	  niggas	  tried	  to	  shit	  on	  me	  I	  was	  le`	  for	  dead,	  They	  tried	  to	  wipe	  me	  out	  of	  they	  history	  	  	  ArMst	  Statement	   	   	   	   	   	   	   	   	   	   	   	  Slide	  2	  of	  2	  	  	  I	  appropriate	  lyrics	  from	  contemporary	  rap	  arMst	  to	  comment	  on	  the	  power	  dynamics	  of	  arMst	  versus	  the	  art	  insMtuMon.	  	  Hip-­‐hop	  is	  a	  very	  direct	  stylized	  rhythmic	  rhyming	  called	  rap	  that	  started	  in	  the	  70’s	  as	  a	  form	  of	  self-­‐expression	  and	  a	  way	  to	  comment	  on	  the	  struggles	  of	  the	  people	  in	  poor	  neighborhoods	  in	  America.	  Rap	  arMst	  Jay-­‐z’s	  last	  album	  made	  in	  2013	  Magna	  Carter,	  made	  references	  to	  power	  dynamics	  in	  society.	  Throughout	  the	  course	  of	  the	  album,	  he	  suggests	  that	  ciMzens	  should	  quesMon	  the	  laws	  of	  government,	  religion,	  and	  in	  other	  form	  of	  control,	  as	  a	  way	  to	  liberate	  one’s	  mind.	  	  In	  my	  work,	  I	  paint	  lyrics	  from	  Magna	  Carter	  onto	  wooden	  panels	  as	  part	  of	  an	  installaMon,	  to	  comment	  on	  the	  power	  dynamics	  within	  the	  art	  world.	  	  	  My	  work	  is	  an	  insMtuMonal	  criMque	  on	  the	  lack	  of	  a	  structured	  approach	  to	  foundaMonal	  drawing	  for	  arMst.	  	  Included	  in	  my	  installaMon,	  are	  the	  Jay	  z	  painted	  panels,	  I	  used	  house	  paint	  to	  write	  the	  word	  “imitator!”	  on	  the	  insMtuMon	  wall,	  a	  personiﬁcaMon	  of	  insMtuMonal	  employee	  who	  is	  shouMng	  imitator	  to	  a	  classical	  arMst	  as	  a	  criMque.	  	  I	  also	  insert	  a	  model	  stand,	  horses	  for	  students	  to	  sit	  on,	  and	  a	  painMng	  of	  an	  ornament	  that	  works	  as	  a	  backdrop	  for	  the	  model.	  	  And,	  lastly	  I	  have	  a	  painMng	  of	  Homer	  Simpson	  painted	  on	  oil	  paper	  that	  is	  taped	  to	  a	  Masonite	  board	  and	  posiMoned	  on	  a	  drawing	  horse	  and	  a	  painMng	  of	  Homer	  the	  epic	  poet	  on	  the	  wall	  directly	  across	  from	  the	  imitator	  painMng.	  	  All	  of	  the	  works	  are	  orchestrated	  in	  a	  space	  surrounding	  the	  empty	  horses	  and	  model	  stand	  to	  suggest	  the	  vacancy	  of	  the	  Atelier	  Academic	  training,	  or	  what	  I	  consider	  foundaMonal	  drawing	  methods.	  	  	  	  The	  installaMon	  also	  becomes	  funcMonal.	  I	  uMlize	  the	  space	  as	  a	  funcMoning	  atelier	  transforming	  myself	  from	  arMst	  to	  educator,	  as	  I	  teach	  students	  the	  atelier	  method	  of	  approaching	  drawing	  from	  life.	  	  Drawing	  reveals	  the	  thought	  process	  of	  the	  arMst	  to	  the	  viewer	  as	  well	  as	  provides	  a	  template	  for	  the	  arMst	  to	  reﬂect	  on	  his	  thoughts;	  it	  creates	  a	  visual	  guide	  for	  him	  to	  further	  understand	  his	  own	  mind	  and	  in	  turn,	  himself	  and	  his	  environment;	  and	  it	  teaches	  him	  the	  limits	  of	  his	  knowledge.	  	  I’m	  talking	  about	  the	  importance	  of	  drawing	  and	  it	  being	  autonomous:	  A	  self-­‐governing	  body,	  and	  it	  is,	  and	  has	  since	  the	  beginning	  of	  mankind	  been	  part	  of	  our	  very	  being,	  our	  mental	  arsenal	  on	  interpreMng	  and	  learning	  about	  the	  world	  around	  us,	  which	  teaches	  us	  about	  ourselves.	  	  By Willie T Jones BAROCO Atelier	  Thank you Committee!!!!
