Factors Affecting Facility-Based Delivery in Indonesia

Abstract

Objectives: To increase understanding of the reasons women choose either facilities or non-facilities for delivery. Methods: A total of 300 women, both postpartum and pregnant, were interviewed in 4 districts in Indonesia. The survey includes questions from the Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey as well as newly created questions. Results: For postpartum facility deliveries, women cited quality of care, knowledge of maternal and child safety and physical access as reasons for choosing a facility. Non-facility deliveries cited cost, quality of care and physical access as barriers which, if removed, would encourage them to deliver in a facility. Conclusions: The government of Indonesia needs to roll-out their public health insurance scheme, jampersal, which will alleviate the costs of facility delivery. Educational campaigns are needed to inform women about the dangers of delivering at home.Master of Public Healt
