Vol. 51, (Suppl) No. 2, 2012 Neurotrophicity, neuroprotection, neuroplasticity and neu-rogenesis are basic biological processes of paramount im-portance, overlapping and acting under genetic control togenerate the endogenous defense activity (EDA) which con-tinually counteracts pathophysiological processes.Pathological cascades contain a limited number of patho-physiological processes. Stroke is characterized mainly by ex-citotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptotic-like processes.Pathophysiological processes share some common mecha-nisms with endogenous basic biological processes (e.g. exci-totoxicity and neurotrophicity together with neuroplasticityhave, as a common important driver, the NMDAR activity;inflammation has an important contribution for neurore-generation, stimulating neuroplasticity, via trophic factors).Every lesion in the nervous system triggers in the firstminute an endogenous neuroprotective reaction. An en-dogenous repair process, combining neuroplasticity andneurogenesis follow this as a second answer. All these pro -cesses are initiated and regulated by neurotrophic factors.Neurotrophic factors are produced by different players inthe brain tissue and are acting in a pleotropic way againstpathological cascades.The same molecules, due to a complex genetically regulatedprocess, are able to induce, immediately after achieving theendogenous neuroprotective effect, neuroplasticity and neu-rogenesis as well.
