Vol. 51, (Suppl) No. 2, 2012 Psychopathology was in the last decade considered to be ina basic crisis, and seemed to losing estimation by clinicians,the clinical approach in part even replaced by questionnaires.In the meanwhile psychiatric diagnostics is in a crisis, themain debate oscillating between categorical versus dimen-sional views or a turn back. Debates focus often on psy-choses, repeating old discussions on dichotomy versusEinheitspsychose. After hundred years of the most famousterm in psychiatry, schizophrenia, being introduced byEugen Bleuler 1911, also this term is debated. A spectrumof new proposals is made to improve psychiatric classifica-tion ranging from combining categorical and dimensionalapproaches to new complex approaches, or to introduce pro-totype matching together with operational criteria, or to de-velop evolutionary psychiatry and evolutionarypsychopathology. The influence of psychological factorsonto the brain structure throughout life is a surprising recentexperience. On the other hand, the diagnosis and classifica-tion of organic psychiatric disorders, especially those withminor psychiatric consequences, remains yet preliminary inthat operational criteria do validate results from the ‘organic’methods like neuroimaging and laboratory methods. Thus,the questions about the interplay in between organic andpsychological factors how certain psychopathologies are pro-duced, remain a surprising challenge.Bechter, K., 2011.
