Abstract
On the example of a few selected writtings from the fields of literature, cultural geography, anthropology and sociology, travel and tourism (Borges, de Botton, Soja, Clifford, Burns, Urry, Augé) this article deals with the experience of "postmodern passengers" through the different cultural approaches to research tourism and the phenomenon of travel and mobility. Furthermore, the consideration is given to the basic motives that lie behind a specific human need for movement as well as the conditions that contributed to the development of tourism as one of the widest spread phenomenon of (post)modern society. The article also gives insight into new ways of perceiving and interpreting space and presents the key changes in modern comunications
