Helsel and Howard Guscar Department of Agronomy, College of Agriculture Federal regulations on the use of herbicides change frequent ly, so stay informed on the status of label registration. Based on avai lable information, recom-mendations in this guide conform to laws and regula-tions at time of writing. You must read and understand the label on herbi-cides you plan to use. Herbicide Evaluation. This guide is based on research and comparative performance over a period of years. However, herbicide performance depends on many factors that cannot be controlled or foretold. (See UMC Guide 4903 "Factors Affecting Herbicide Performance.") For this rea-son, results may vary widely from those normally expected. Recommendations in this guide do not and cannot imply satisfactory performance in all cases . An element of risk is involved in the use of any herbicide. Comparative performance with emphasis on weed con-trol and crop tolerance is a major factor in herbicide evaluation. Cost has not been considered in these recom-mendations. Because no herbicide treatment is superior to others in all circumstances, no effort has been made to list treatments in this guide in any order of preference . These recommendations are for conventional seedbed preparation only . Appl ication Rates. Because the concentration of herbicides in commercial products may vary, herbicide rates are given on the basis of active ingredient (called acid equivalent for some herbicides) or per surface acre that will actually be treated. (See Table 5 for herbicide conversion values .) Note that treated areas will be less than acres of crop in the field, if the herbicide is applied in a band . Label rates take legal precedence over rates included in this guide. 4135 Incorporating in Soil Before Planting • Soil must be in good working condition for successful incorporation . • Some herbicides should be incorporated into the soil to prevent their loss from the surface. • Other herbicides may be incorporated in the soil at a more convenient time of application or to improve their performance, especially when application is followed by a lack of sufficient rainfall for optimum performance of the herbicide. • Incorporating some herbicides may reduce their per-formance . Atrazine (Numerous Brands and Formulations). If favorable rainfall occurs, atrazine is more effective as a surface application than as an incorporated one. If rainfall is light or delayed after application , incorporation is beneficial. Rates to use are the same as those given under "Pre-emergence Treatments in Guide 4136 .' ' Incorporate shal-lowly. Do not apply more than two weeks before planting. See "Pre-emergence Treatments" for further discussion on the use of atrazine . Metolachlor (Dual SE). This is primarily a herbicide for annual grass control. It can be applied preplant, incorporated, or as a pre-emergent. (See Atrazine section in Guide 4136 under pre-emergence application.) Butylate (Sutan + ). Sutan + is a formulation of butylate that contains a chemical to help protect the corn from injury from the herbicide. The protectant has been quite effective · in research observation . Butylate gives good control of most annual grasses. It is slightly less consistent for shattercane and johnsongrass seedling control than EPTC. It is partially effective for nut sedge control. The rate of active ingredient application is 4 pounds/acre . Table 1. Bicep Preplant Incorporated for Field Corn (Pounds Active Ingredient). There is some benefit from cross disking . The second disking should be done in a different direction and no deeper than the first. Follow disking with a spiked-tooth harrow or other leveling device. If not, incorporate the herbicide immedi-ately after application to avoid loss from the soil surface. A moist soil surface, high temperature and wind increase the rate of loss of the herbicide . Do not apply more than two weeks before planting. Do not use butylate on corn seed stock. Very shallow cultivation may aid in weed control. Butylate (without the protectant) is also available as a granule containing IO percent active ingredient. • For control ofjohnsongrass seedlings and nut sedge and for suppression of rhizomatous johnsongrass, use 4 pounds/acre on soils coarser than silt loam and 6 pounds/acre on silt loam, clay loam , and clay soi ls. To suppress johnsongrass from rhizomes, plow and till the soil before application to break the rhizomes into small pieces, incorpo-rate the herbicide thoroughly, and supplement the treatment with cultivation. Butyl ate ($utan + 6. 7E) plus Atrazine. This combina- IA tion gives good control of most annual grasses arid "W broad-leaved weeds . It should be incorporated in the same manner as described for butylate alone. Use I pound/acre atrazine on soi ls up to 5 percent organic matter or 2 4135 ·• -pounds/acre on soils with more than 5 percent organic matter. Apply butylate at 3.4 to 4.4 pounds/acre . The atrazine may be tank-mixed with the butylate and incorporat-ed , or it can be applied on the surface of the soil following incorporation of the butylate. Do not use on corn grown for seed stock. A butylate + atrazine combination (without a protectant) is available as a granule with 18 percent butylate plus 6 percent atrazine . Cyanazine(Bladex) + Butylate(Sutan + 6.7E). The cyanazine may be tank-mixed with the butylate and incorpo-rated, or it can be applied on the surface of the soil follow ing incorporation of the butylate . Apply 0 .8-2.0 pounds/acre cyanazine plus 3 .4-4.4 pounds/acre butyl ate, depending on soil type. Follow all instructions and precautions on the labels of both herbicides. EPTC (Eradicane 6.7E). Eradicane is a formulation of EPTC , which contains a chemical to help protect the corn from injury from the herbicide. The protectant has been quite effective. This treatment normally gives good control of grass weeds and fair control of broad-leaved weeds. It is especially effective for control of shattercane and johnsongrass seedlings. it provides partial control of johnsongrass originating from rhizomes. Thorough disk-ing to cut rhizomes into small segments is essential. Apply at 6 pounds/acre for johnsongrass control or 4 pounds/acre for shattercane control. Do not use on corn grown for seed stock. A tank-mix with dyfonate has improved performance in northwest Missouri. Table 3. Alachlor (Lasso). EPTC (Eradicane 6.7E) + Bladex. Tank-mix 4-6 pounds Eradicane with 2.5-3.12 pounds Bladex 80W or 1.5-2 pounds Bladex 4-L per acre. Refer to Bladex label for rates based on soil type. Metolachlor (Dual SE) + Aatrex (Bicep). Dual in combination with Aatrex provides a broad spectrum of annual weed control. Dual is effective in controlling most annual grasses. Incorporate at a depth of 2 inches . (See Table 2.) Metolachlor (Dual SE) + Cyanazine (Bladex). Apply this tank mix to the soil and incorporate in top 2 inches within 14 days of planting. (See Table 2.) Metolachlor (Dual SE) + Aatrex. Application rates for this tank mix are the same as for Dual 8-E and Bladex in Table 2 . Alachlor (Lasso). For surface blend rates per acre, see Table 3. Alachlor (Lasso) + Atrazine. See Table 4. Table 4. Alachlor (Lasso) + Atrazine.
