Qualified and creative marine officer – competitive in international labour market

Abstract

In the introductory section of this paper, the author has pointed out to the declining trend of marine officer cadre in the world and the position and role of the Croatian officers in this global process. In the next chapter, the author has explored the factors contributing to the attractiveness of marine officer’s profession conducting a scientific research using opinion survey questionnaire method on 31 Croatian officers on board vessels owned by foreigners. The analysis of the survey has shown that the attractiveness of marine officer’s profession will not increase by the reorganization of the whole educational system, which is advocated by particular companies in Croatia. Radical change of current situation in the country and society regarding the problems of seafarers would be absolutely required. The survey results have shown that the knowledge and creativity of Croatian marine officers are the qualities which highly distinguish them from their competitors onboard ships owned by foreign owners
