Otkri}e an-tibiotika dalo je infektolozima sna`no oru`je u borbi protiv razli~itih mikroorganizama koji su prethodnoodnosili tisu}e `ivota. Me|utim, op~injeni snagom antibiotika kao u~inkovitog oru`ja za uni{tavanje bak-terija, rijetko obra}amo pozornost na druga pozitivna svojstva koja razni terapeutici, pa tako i antibioticiimaju. Iako je jo{ uvijek nedostatan broj radova koji govore o imunomodulatornom djelovanju razli~itih te-rapeutika ~ije primarno djelovanje nije imunomodulacija, ipak je sve vi{e studija koje pokazuju i taj diou~inkovitosti terapeutika kojima danas raspola`emo, uklju~uju}i i antibiotike. Danas je ve} bez sumnjedokazano da barem tri razli~ite skupine antibiotika (makrolidi, kinoloni i tetraciklini) imaju zna~ajnoimunomodulatorno djelovanje, uklju~uju}i i protuupalno. S druge strane, brojni su preparati koji predstav-ljaju na neki na~in pomo}na sredstva, tako|er va`ni i u~inkoviti u borbi protiv infektivnih bolesti, a koji svo-je u~inke baziraju na razli~itim stupnjevima imunomodulatornog djelovanja kao {to su bakterijski liofiliza-ti, probiotici te razni biljni preparati. @ele}i potaknuti daljnja istra`ivanja, povezivanja stru~njaka, kao i dodatnu edukaciju u ovom podru~ju,Sekcija za imunologiju infektivnih bolesti Hrvatskog dru{tva za infektivne bolesti Hrvatskog lije~ni~kogzbora, organizirala je simpozij pod nazivom "Terapeutici kao imunomodulatori u infektivnim bolestima".Simpozij ima za cilj predstaviti najnovije spoznaje o imunomodulatornom djelovanju razli~itih terapeutikau infektivnim bolestima. Nekoliko predavanja }e biti usmjereno na imunomodulatorno djelovanje antibioti-ka u razli~itim infektivnim stanjima, ulogu imunomodulacije u ishodu zaraznih bolesti, te pregledu labora-torijskih tehnika i tehnologija kojima mjerimo imunomodulaciju. Osim toga, u okviru predavanja }e bitiraspravljeno potencijalno imunomodulatorno djelovanje drugih preparata kao {to su bakterijski liofilizati,probiotici i biljni preparati koji mogu imati imunomodulatorni u~inak.Ovaj skup je namijenjen lije~nicima infektolozima i mikrobiolozima, lije~nicima obiteljske i {kolskemedicine, internistima, klini~kim i bazi~nim imunolozima i istra`iva~ima srodnih struka, farmaceutima ifarmakolozima. Infektolo{ki glasnik, glasilo Hrvatskog dru{tva za infektivne bolesti i Klinike za infektivnebolesti "Dr. Fran Mihaljevi}", krovne institucije za lije~enje infektivnih bolesti, podr`at }e ovaj skup s te-matskim brojem. Tematika broja je imunologija infektivnih bolesti, a ve}i broj radova se upravo odnosi naimunomodulatorne mehanizme terapeutika u razli~itim stanjima i infektivnim bolestima. Vjerujemo da }eovaj broj biti va`an podsjetnik i stru~no i znanstveno {tivo svim sudionicima simpozija, ali i svima onimakoji nisu mogli sudjelovati u radu simpozija, a `ele nau~iti vi{e o imunomodulatornom djelovanju terapeu-tika u infektivnim bolestima.Gosti urednici: prof. dr. sc. The discoveryof antibiotics gave infectious disease specialists a powerful weapon to fight against various microorganismsand save thousands of lives. However, enchanted by the power of antibiotics as an effective tool for de-stroying bacteria, we rarely pay attention to other positive features that various therapeutics, including an-tibiotics have. Although there is still an insufficient number of papers describing immunomodulatory activ-ity of different therapeutics whose primary effect is not immunomodulation, there are more and more stud-ies that show this possibility of therapeutics, including antibiotics. Today, it has undoubtedly been provedthat at least three different groups of antibiotics (macrolides, quinolones and tetracyclines) have significantimmunomodulatory effect, including anti-inflammatory. On the other hand, there are many other prepara-tions important and effective in the fight against infectious diseases, whose effect is based on different de-grees of imunomodulatory activity such as bacterial lyophilisate, probiotics, and various herbal prepara-tions.Wishing to encourage further research, to connect various specialists, as well as provide additional train-ing in this area, the Section for Infectious Disease Immunology of the Croatian Society for InfectiousDiseases of the Croatian Medical Association, has organized a symposium entitled "Therapeutics asimmunomodulators in infectious diseases." The symposium aims to present the latest findings on theimmunomodulatory effect of various therapeutic agents in infectious diseases. Several lectures will focuson the immunomodulatory effect of antibiotics in different infectious conditions, the role of immunomodula-tion in the outcome of infectious diseases, and a review of laboratory techniques and technologies to mea-sure immunomodulation will be presented. In addition, lectures will discuss potential immunomodulatoryeffects of other preparations such as bacterial lyophilisate, probiotics and herbal preparations that may haveimmunomodulatory effects.This symposium is designed for microbiologists and infectious disease specialists, general practitioners,internists, clinical and basic immunologists and researchers in related fields, pharmacists and pharmacolo-gists. Lectures presented at the symposium are published in this thematic issue of the Croatian Journal ofInfection (Infektolo{ki glasnik), the official publication of the Croatian Society for Infectious Diseases andthe University Hospital for Infectious Diseases "Dr. Fran Mihaljevic". The topic covered in this thematic is-sue is infectious disease immunology, and the majority of papers refer to the immunomodulatory mecha-nisms of therapeutics in various conditions and infectious diseases.
