Central nervous system dysfunction isthought to be a primary driver of AIS progression.PurposeThe goal of this study was to observe and analyze anypatterns of imbalance in neurotransmitter status inpatients with AIS.MethodsThe charts of 31 AIS patients from the same multidisci-plinary medical center, ages 11-18, were reviewed andcompared to a sampling of 31 patients without a historyof scoliosis. Testing consisted of a urinalysis panel, ana-lyzing 12 common neurotransmitters.ResultsReview of the completed urinalyses revealed a trendtowards elevated histamine, elevated norepinephrine anddecreased serotonin in the AIS patients as compared tonon-scoliotics. Since these neurotransmitters are typi-cally expressed in specific cortical areas, this pattern ofimbalance may manifest as a functional hemisphericity,causing asymmetrical efferent responses to peripheral,afferent muscular inputs, and altering firing thresholdsin their respective pathways.Conclusions and discussion4In the current sampling of patients with AIS, a trendtoward specific neurotransmitter imbalances was observed.These imbalances may help shed light on the often-observed somatosensory dyscoordination seen in thispatient population.Published: 18 September 2013References1.
