Ontology for Biom edical Investigations

em ail: obi­users@ googlegroups.comThe goal of OBI is to enable a form al representation of biom edical investigations that captures the experim ental 
evidence on which their findings are based. The scope of OBI includes: m aterials m ade in and produced for 
investigations, research objectives, experim ental protocols, roles of people in investigations and processing and 
publication of data gathered in investigations. Use of OBI will allow com parison of experim ental data from  the wide 
array of scientific disciplines represented by dom ain experts in the OBI consortium . OBI follows the principles laid out 
by  the  OBO  foundry,  and  integrates  tightly  with  other  foundry  candidate  ontologies,  such  as  GO 
(www.geneontology.org) and ChEBI (www.ebi.ac.uk/chebi/) whose term s are used to describe biological reality. The 
use of OBI by the scientific com m unity to represent or annotate their investigations within electronic data resources 
will facilitate interdisciplinary data synthesis, enable access to their data on the sem antic web and im prove third­party 
understanding of inform ation related to life­science and clinical investigations.
M easuring the glucose 
concentration in blood. The large

place first. In this process, a syringe 
is used as a device to draw blood 
from  the m ouse which bears the 
specim en role. At the end of this 
process, a tube contains the blood 
specim en. In a second step, that 
blood will be used as the evaluant in 
an analyte assay in which the 
concentration of glucose in the blood 
is m easured. A glucom eter device is 
used to m ake this m easurem ent. The 
analyte role inheres in the glucose 
m olecules scattered throughout the 
blood specim en. The objective of this 
planned process is to analyze the 
analyte (glucose) concentration. This 
m odel of a specific use case is being 
used as the basis for generation of 
tem plates allowing us to autom ate 
subsequent additions of sim ilar
