News                                                                                                                                                                                  KiG, 2002, 192XIXth International Conference on the History ofCartographyMadrid, 1-6 July 2001The Nineteenth International Conference on the Historyof Cartography was held in Madrid, Spain, 1-6 July2001. The first meeting of experts in the history ofcartography was held long ago, in the year 1964 in theRoyal Geographic Society, London, during the XXthInternational Geographical Congress as one of therelated symposia. That Congress was an impressiveaffair. It was opened by the queen of England herself,and was attended by various other dignitaries. Thesymposia on the history of cartography afterwards cometo be referred to as the First International Conference onthe History of Cartography (ICHC). The success of thesymposium in 1964 led to a second, organised inLondon again in the year of 1967, attended by theimpressive number of participants (200). From that timethe International Conferences on the History ofCartography are organised biennially, mostly in Europe,except three of them that took place in the USA andCanada. Besides the main sessions there have beenother activities at the conferences, most conspicuouslythe exhibits, excursions as well as receptions and visits.The conference introduced the meetings of variousspecialised groups such as International CartographicAssociations Commission on the History ofCartography, International Society of Curators of EarlyMaps (ISCEM), Imago Mundi and the round table ontheoretical aspects on the history of cartography. Thebiennial International Conferences on the History ofCartography are held under the auspices of ImagoMundi Ltd. They bring together a wide array of scholarswho are interested in all aspects of the production andconsumption of maps: historians of cartography,geographers, cartographers, librarians and archivists, arthistorians, literary scholars and scholars from otherrelated disciplines.ICHC 2001 has been organised in Madrid by theNational Library of Spain, Complutense University,Imago Mundi Ltd. and Ministry of Defence in co-operation with a number of other institutions. Justbefore the main conference, two meetings took place inthe National Library of Spain: first, the InternationalSociety of Curators of Early Maps and second, a sessionorganised by the International CartographicAssociation. Working session has been held in thepremises of the National Library of Spain and theMonastery of El Escorial. The inaugural session and thetwo working sessions took place in the AmphitheatreRamón y Cajal of the Faculty of Medicine at theComplutense University.The official languages of the Conference were English,French and Spanish, with simultaneous translationsbetween English and Spanish.The main Conference themes were the Cartography ofSpain and Iberoamerica. There were a number ofworking sessions: Maps and Landscape; ColonialCartography; Mapping: Theory and Motifs;Cartographic Methods; Culture, Politics and Maps;Indigenous Mapping of New Spain; Military Maps;Mapping of Eastern Europe; Renaissance Cartography;Mapping Spain; Maritime Maps and Map Publishing.During the Conference a number of cartographyexhibitions was on display: Treasures of Spanish93Vijesti                                                                                                                                                                                  KiG, 2002, 119. međunarodna konferencija o povijestikartografijeMadrid, 16. srpnja 2001.U srpnju 2001. odrana je u Madridu 19. u nizumeđunarodnih konferencija o povijesti kartografije. Prvitakav specijalistički skup odran je daleke 1964. godineu Kraljevskom geografskom drutvu, u sklopu 20.međunarodnoga geografskoga kongresa u Londonu, kaojedan od samostalnih simpozija. Veliki uspjeh togsimpozija doveo je 1967. godine do organiziranjasljedeće, ovaj put samostalne konferencije, također uLondonu, koja je okupila impozantan broj od oko 200kartografskih stručnjaka i znanstvenika. Od tada semeđunarodne konferencije o povijesti kartografijeodravaju u pravilu svake dvije godine, najčeće uEuropi, iako su do sada odrane tri u SAD-u i Kanadi.Konferencija je s vremenom postala mjestom redovitihokupljanja Međunarodnog drutva kustosa starih karata(International Society of Curators of Early Maps ISCEM), direktora Imago Mundi, te Okruglog stola oteorijskim pitanjima povijesti kartografije.Devetnaestu međunarodnu konferenciju o povijestikartografije u Madridu organizirali su panjolskaNacionalna knjinica, madridsko SveučiliteComplutense, Ministarstvo obrane i Imago Mundi Ltd.u suradnji s nizom drugih institucija. Prije početkakonferencije odran je sastanak Međunarodnoga drutvakustosa starih karata i sastanak Međunarodnogakartografskog drutva. Slubeni jezici konferencije bilisu engleski, francuski i panjolski uz simultanoprevođenje engleskoga i panjolskoga.Osnovna tema konferencije bila je Kartografijapanjolske i Iberoamerike, a referati su bili grupirani uskupine pod naslovima: Karte i krajolik, Kolonijalnakartografija, Kartiranje, Teorija i povodi, Kartografskemetode, Kultura, politika i karte, Urođeničko kartiranjeNove panjolske, Vojne karte, Kartiranje istočneEurope, Renesansna kartografija, Kartiranje panjolske,Pomorske karte i Izdavanje karata.Konferencija je svečano otvorena u amfiteatru Ramón yCajal Medicinskog fakulteta Sveučilita Complutense.Većinu je konferencijskih događanja udomilapanjolska nacionalna knjinica (Biblioteca Nacionalde Espańa), a jedan dan dio se znanstvenog programaodrao u Monasterio de El Escorial.Armilarna sfera u knjinici u Monasterio de ElEscorialArmilar sphere in the library at Monasterio de ElEscorialIzlaganja i diskusije popraćene su trima izlobama:Blago panjolske kartografije (Treasures of Spanishcartography) postavljena je u Nacionalnoj knjinici,Geografske knjige u Sveučilitu Complutense oddavnina do 18. st. (Geography books in the UniversitadComplutense from Antiquity to the XVIIIth Century) uPovijesnoj knjinici Marqués de Valdecillas SveučilitaComplutense, a izloba Madrid na kartama: 16222001(Madrid seen through its maps: 16222001) odrana jeu Casa de la Panaderia, na Plaza Mayor u Madridu. Sveje izlobe pratio i odgovarajući katalog.Program konferencije bio je vrlo bogat. Most of the participants come from Europeancountries (117), and the rest of them (60) from both ofAmericas, Asia and Australia. There were 57 papersand 24 posters.The organisers succeeded to provide the financialsupport in order to issue a CD-ROM of the presentedpapers. We hope for successful completion of thatproject.Finally, it has to be pointed out that the travel expensesneeded to attend the conference are rather high. Thistime again, David Woodward, Mathew Edney andKenneth Nebenzahl, the directors of the AmericanFriends of the J. B. Harley Research Fellowship helpedwith the travel award. Without their financial help andsupport a large number of participants, including two ofthem from Croatia, could not afford to attend theConference. Thus we would like to express our specialgratitude to our American friends from the J. B. Najveći je broj sudionika bio izeuropskih zemalja (117), dok je znatan udjel od 60sudionika doao iz obiju Amerika, Azije i Australije.Odrano je ukupno 57 referata i postavljeno 24 postera.Organizatori su osigurali potrebne uvjete kako bi ovukonferenciju popratilo i objavljivanje radova na CD-ROM-u. Nadamo se uspjenom ostvarenju togvrijednog projekta.Na kraju treba naglasiti da svako putovanje stoji mnogonovaca. I ovaj put u pomoć su priskočili DavidWoodward, Matthew Edney i Kenneth Nebenzahl,ravnatelji zaklade The American Friends of the J. B.Harley Research Fellowships, Inc. Bez njihove novčanepomoći sudjelovanje većeg broja sudionika, među njimai dvoje iz Hrvatske, na 19. konferenciji o povijestikartografije ne bi bilo izvedivo. Zbog toga posebnozahvaljujemo američkim prijateljima iz zaklade zaistraivanje J. B.
