Professor Zinka Pavleti} – Croatian Botanist.On the occasion of her seventieth birthdayIt is always a pleasure to wish a happy birthday to a per-son with a rich experience in life, a person who broughtknowledge, emotions and her heart into our lives. Such a per-son, who has left a deepmark on the entire generation of Cro-atian botanists of today, is Professor Zinka Pavleti}.Prof. Dr. Zinka Pavleti} (nee Horvatin) was born in Zag-reb on November 3rd 1934, where she attended elementaryschool and in 1953 graduated from the 8th Gymnasium. In1958 she gained a B.Sc. in Biology from the Faculty of Natu-ral Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Zagreb,with a thesis from the field of botany. She completed theM.Sc. graduate course at the same Faculty in 1964 with a the-sis entitled »Morphologic research of the Centaurea ragusina L. achene«, and in 1973completed a PhD in Biological Sciences with a thesis entitled »Flora and vegetation of theIsle of Bi{evo, with particular focus on the phytogeographic position of the island.« Both ofthese theses were made under the mentorship of well-known botanist and professor of sys-tematic botany at the University of Zagreb at the time, Professor Radovan Domac.From the first days of her working career, Professor Pavleti} was involved with workdealing with botanical issues. She began her career in 1959 as an assistant at the Faculty ofAgriculture, Univ. Zagreb, and worked there until 1962 when she moved to the Institute forBotany, Univ. Zagreb. In 1967 she became an assistant at the Department of Botany, Fac-ulty of Natural Sciences andMathematics of the University of Zagreb. She settled there andworked on promotion of the field of botany until her retirement in 2000. She was promotedto Assistant Professor in 1980, in the field of flora and plant taxonomy, in 1988 she waselected an Assistant Professor and in 1996 a full Professor at the same faculty.On numerous occasions she spent time on longer or shorter sabbaticals at different foreignbotanical institutions (Stuttgart, Zurich, Graz, Uppsala, Seattle, Omaha etc.). She also partici-pated in numerous international expert and scientific excursions, studying primarily the floraand vegetation of the Mediterranean coast, but also of the wider European continent (Italy,Spain, Greece, Sicily, Sardinia, Turkey, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Norway,etc.) Due to favourable circumstances, for a few consecutive years she had the opportunity tostudy the plantworld of the desert, prairie andmountain areas of theNorthAmerican continent.All these study visits helped build her into an expert in plant taxonomy and flora.From her election to the rank of Senior Lecturer up to retirement, Professor ZinkaPavleti} held lectures in numerous botanical classes at the Biology Department of the Fac-ulty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, such as Cormobionta and Special Botany II (to3rd year students of B.Ed. courses), General Botany and General Botany II (to 1st year stu-ACTA BOT. CROAT. 64 (2), 2005 395dents of all courses), Morphology, 3rd year of Ecology course), and field classes in Botany(for the 1st and 3rd years of the Biology curriculum). Concurrently with giving these lec-tures at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Profes-sor Pavleti} was a coordinator and co-lecturer of Biology for Chemical Engineers course(1st year) at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. For these courses she wrotethe course materials »Morphology«, »Cormobionta« and »Botany field work« for 1st yearbiology students of all courses. It should be pointed out that she introduced a new electivecourse into the course, »Nomenclature and Plant Determination,« aimed at all courses andyears of Biology programme – a course that still today evokes large interest among studentsand that has encouragedmany young botanists to orient themselves towards floristic research.She proved herself an exceptional lecturer, gifted with the ability to transfer knowledgeto the younger generations suggestively. Through her interesting lectures, containing nu-merous examples from the life that surrounds us, she knew how to bring beauty and thequintessence of botany to all students, regardless of their primary interests during thecourse of their studies, and positively contributed to the sound botanical education of manygenerations of biologists, particularly of those who continued to work in schools all acrossCroatia. As a professor of botany she also worked for a number of years at the Faculty ofNatural andMathematical Sciences and Education of the University of Split, where she lefta visible mark in the cultivation and education of numerous future secondary educationteachers, as well as of young botanists, particularly university assistants in botany.Professor Zinka Pavleti} was first and foremost a dedicated and meticulous mentor tostudents and younger colleagues, and under her guidance more than forty graduate, ninemaster’s and five doctoral theses were written and defended. It can be rightly said that owingto the efforts of Professor Pavleti} botany in Croatia, despite the former bad employmentpolicy will not die out. Her selfless dedication and fighting spirit, whenever necessary,made possible the employment and education of younger botanical professionals. Her ab-solute encouragement, support and faith in the young and their ideas, ensured that even afterher retirement a number of young botanists, florists and taxonomists remain in her groupfor systematics and flora, who continue the effort for further development of this field.The scientific activity of Professor Zinka Pavleti} includes the fields of flora, taxon-omy, geobotany and vegetation research into the higher plants, primarily members of theCroatian flora. She conducted floristic research in different areas of Croatia, in continental,lowlands, highlands and Adriatic, while her floristic research into the Central Dalmatianisles is particularly important. This research deals primarily with the total analysis of a cer-tain area, the analysis of rare and endemic species and with floristic analysis of certaincommunities. Her taxonomical works deal with the problematics of endemic species orlower taxa within the genera Daucus, Silene, Crocus, Festuca, etc. Geobotanical researchencompasses research into plant dissemination, the vegetation of certain areas or particularplant communities important in vegetation of Croatia.During her rich and fruitful scientific work, Professor Pavleti} published over seventyarticles on her research, in both national and international publications. She participatedwith presentations at more than forty international and national scientific congresses.She worked, either as a leader or as an associate on numerous important scientific pro-jects, to mention only a few, such as »Flora Analytica Iugoslaviae«, »Flora of SR Croatia«,»Vegetation map of SR Croatia«, »Research of Croatian flora« and »Phytocenological--syntaxonomical researches of the Mediterranean vegetation«.396 ACTA BOT. CROAT. 64 (2), 2005MITI] B.She is a member of numerous scientific and professional societies, such as the CroatianBiological Society, Croatian Ecological Society, Croatian Natural Society, Ostalpin-Dina-rischeGesellschaft für Vegetationskunde, Amicale internationale de phytosociologie (France– Bailleul-Camerino), OPTIMA– Organisation pour l’etude phyto-taxonomique de la Re-gion Mediterraneene etc.Outside the university, Professor Pavleti}’s professional activities included numerouseducational lectures, field trips and seminar works for B.Ed. Biology graduates working inprimary and secondary education, encouraging the lifelong education and interest ofschool teachers in botany and the transfer of that interest to their pupils. She worked vigor-ously on the publication of school books, where her simple yet condensed style, was maxi-mally adapted to the age of the pupils (biology handbooks for 7th grade of primary schooland 2nd grade of grammar school, published by »Profil«). She was also a long term consult-ing editor for biology handbooks, as well as for numerous other publications of profes-sional botanical literature published by [kolska knjiga. For over twenty years she has beena member of the State committee for the movement »Nauku mladima« (now called»Znanost mladima«) and a coordinator for the botany »Summer school for young biolo-gists«. From October 15th 1991 she was the president of the Republic Committee for theteaching of Biology and Nature, appointed by the Department for Schools, Ministry of Ed-ucation and Culture, and from May 24th 1991 the president of the Republic Committee forthe drafting of the Biology Curriculum for Primary and Secondary Schools, appointed bythe Department for Schools, Ministry of Education and Culture.It should also particularly be mentioned that Professor Pavleti}, during her entire work-ing life, worked on the popularisation of botany. She held numerous lectures and led expertfield trips in the seminars for B.Ed. Biology, for the Croatian Biological Society, at theOpen University, as well as for other societies interested in the field of botany. She pub-lished numerous popular articles in the magazine for the popularisation of natural sciencesPriroda. She also translated a few botany books (fromGerman) and participated in the pro-duction of three studies on the plants of some areas in Croatia.The bright trail left by Professor Pavleti} in the history of Croatian botany, and particu-larly in education and raising of young botanists, has not faded. Although retired, she hasnot stopped writing and publishing the results of her long term researches, and always findstime for constructive discussions with younger colleagues, whom she receives with loveand respect, always with good advice and support to offer to them. Professor Zinka Pavletić – Croatian Botanist. On the occasion of her seventieth birthday

Professor Katarina-Daniela Dubravec – Croatianbotanist. On the occasion of her seventieth birthdayProfessor Katarina-Daniela Dubravec, PhD. (Mat-ek) was born April 30, 1933, in Nova Cerkev priVojniku (Slovenia), where she completed her ele-mentary education. She went on to attended the RealGymnasium secondary school in Celje, from whereshe moved to Zagreb (Croatia) to graduate in Agri-culture at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry in1959. She spent three years as a demonstrator at theBotany Department at the Faculty of Agriculture andForestry, University of Zagreb. As an undergraduate,she spent three months of practical training at the In-stitute of Phytopathology and Applied Zoology inGiessen (Germany). For a short period, she headedthe Livestock Production Department at the Agricul-ture Industry Coop «PIK Drenovci« near Vinkovci(from June 1–November 30, 1960).On December 1, 1960, she was appointed re-search assistant for agricultural botany at the Department of Botany at the Faculty of Agri-culture and Forestry, University of Zagreb. She completed the tertiary level of education atthe Faculty of Science of the University of Zagreb, graduating in her major – Botany: Mor-phology and Physiology. She earned her master’s degree in 1965with her thesis –AContri-bution to the Knowledge of the Anatomy of Ecballium elaterium (L.) A. Rich.In 1965/1966, she received a scholarship from the Government of the Kingdom of Den-mark to study at the Department of Plant Biology of the Royal Veterinary and AgriculturalUniversity in Copenhagen. During her seven-month stay there, she worked on researchconcerning photosynthesis, transpiration and photoperiodism.Her PhD. came in 1972 with a dissertation on A Contribution to Knowledge of the Ana-tomical Structure of Fruits of some Cultivated Representatives of the Genera Cucurbitaand Lagenaria at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Zagreb.She became an assistant professor in 1974, an associate professor in 1979 and became afull university professor in 1984.Together with Professor Jelka Ani}, PhD. from 1980–1984, she lectured on Botany forAnimal Sciences and Plant Physiology. From 1989/90 to her retirement, she lectured in thecourses of Botany and Plant Physiology, as well as occasionally lecturing in Floriculture,Decorative Plant Cultivation and Park Plants.It should be particularly pointed out that lectures in botanical subjects were for freshmen,i.e. a very large number of students were present at lectures, a number of exercise groups andfield trips. This demanded a high level of diligence and effort from lecturers and their assistants.ACTA BOT. Her lectures in the study of plant sciences concerned Selected Chapters ofPlant Physiology, whilePhytophysiologywas her lecture topic pertaining to agro-ecology.Professor Dubravec was an associate of theMostar Faculty of Agriculture and the Agri-cultural Department of the Pore~ branch of Rijeka College, where she lectured on subjectsfrom the field of botany.Prof. Katarina-Daniela Dubravec, PhD. was the head of the Deparment for AgriculturalBotany at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Zagreb from 1989 to1999, whenshe retired.Aside form her numerous lecturing responsibilities, Prof. Dubravec is also an all-roundscientist, professional, pedagogue and publicist in the field of botany: Morphology andPhysiology of Plants, Floristics and Vegetation Mapping.Among her more outstanding work is research on fruit ontogeny. By researching fruitsfrom the squash family (Cucurbitaceae), particularly Bryonia, Cucurbita, Ecballium andLagenaria she proved the seed-vessels of those plants create congenital grafting of leafovary walls with receptacle torus walls. As the peripheral parts of squash plants developfrom receptacle walls and create the outside skin of fruits, Prof. Dubravec dubbed it thepericarpoid. She considers the pericarp tissue that develops from fruit leaves embracingthe particularly fibrous parts of fruit. Due to the border between the pericarpoid and thefruit coat in the squash not being very sharp, she labeled as pericarpoid any peripheral tis-sue reaching all the way to the veins on the inside of the fruits.She studied the ontogeny of fruits in apples and pears. She particularly concentrated oncystolites thicker cell walls in squash (Cucurbita pepo), beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) andpulverizer (Ecballium elaterium), as well as milk tubes, cork and anomalous structures invarious squash (Cucurbitaceae).In numerous studies, Prof. Dubravec covered the anatomic substance of leaves fromsome fruit and decorative species, as well as some cultivars of tobacco.Furthermore, Prof. K. Dubravec paid particular attention to the dynamics and intensity ofleaf transpiration in various agricultural crops (apples, peaches, pears, corn and tobacco), aswell as weeds and Judas tree (Cercis siliquastrum), in her eco-physiological research.Professor Dubravec took part for over a decade in research onwhat effects growth regu-lators have on cultivated plants, publishing 24 papers on this topic. In most of those papersshe dealt with the application of various substances as growth regulators (Agrispon,Agrovit, Alar, Cultar, Ergostim, Ethrel, Tomatin, etc.) in fruit growing (apples, pears,blackberries and sour cherries), gardening (tomatoes and peppers), arable farming (corn,wheat and Swedish turnip), as well as in viniculture. She also researched the influence ofgrowth regulators on the growth and development of tobacco and chrysanthemums, whilein one paper she published her results on a study of the the application of growth regulatorson nonagricultural surfaces.Amajor part of Prof. Dubravec’s scientific work encompassed floristic and phytoceno-logical research. She established four new kinds of flora in Croatia: Cucumis metuliferus(Cucurbitaceae), Proboscidea louisianica (Martyniaceae), Sechium edule (Cucurbita-ceae) and Solanum muricatum (Solanaceae). Aside from that, she described new habitatsfor the following species: Eleusine indica for Croatian flora, Echinocystis lobata for Cro-408 ACTA BOT. CROAT. 64 (2), 2005BRITVEC M.atian and Slovenian flora,Chimaphylla umbellata for Slovenian flora and Sicyos angulatusfor the flora in what used to be Yugoslavia. She also researched weed flora on rocky pasturesin the central part of Cres Island and in vineyards in theOki} – Plje{evica vineyard district.Prof. K. Dubravec studied the flora in field communities in the area of the Sovska Lake,Podravina, Slavonska Po`ega and Slavonski Brod. Furthermore, she published a number ofpapers on peat, grass and vegetation of pine forests in the area of her native Vojnik krajCelja (Slovenia), including a paper on vegetation changes caused by game.Prof. Katarina-Daniela Dubravec, PhD., both independently and as a coauthor, pub-lished 87 papers.During her work Prof. Dubravec at the Department of Agricultural Botany of the Uni-versity of Zagreb worked on a number of themes and projects of the University of ZagrebFaculty of Agriculture, as well as for the University of Zagreb Faculty of Science. She par-ticipated in the mapping of Croatian vegetation map for close to fifteen years on a projectunder the auspices of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Science.Prof. Katarina-Daniela Dubravec PhD. independently authored two textbooks titledBotany and coauthored four: Botany, Plant Physiology, Cultivated Plants in Croatia andNeighboringAareas and Field and Pasture Plant Species. Prof. Dubravec coauthored RedBooks of Plant Species in the Republic of Croatia (sections on Slatina, Slavonski Brod andKarlovac), as well as Vegetable Protection.Prof. K. Dubravec was a mentor to two agronomists during their postgraduate master anddoctoral degree studies. She was also amentor in 22 undergraduate papers, as well as a mem-ber of 35 graduation committees, 8 master degree committees and 6 doctoral committees.Prof. Dubravec, PhD. is a member of four scientific and professional societies inCroatia, as well as the Eastern Alpine and Dinaric Society for Vegetation Ecology and Fed-eration of European Societies of Plant Physiology.During my years of working and socializing with Prof. Dubravec, PhD., I have come toknow her as a professor and mentor. Every time we met, our time together was both inter-esting and useful.
