U prirodi je ugrožen velik broj biljnih vrsta od kojih mnoge imaju važnost u hortikulturi odnosno općenito proizvodnji usjeva. Ukoliko je razlog ugroženosti biljne vrste eksploatacija u ekonomske svrhe, oblik njene zaštite bio bi i komercijalni uzgoj. Jedna od samoniklih ukrasnih biljaka koja se kod nas, iako je zakonom zaštićena, u prirodi iskorištava za potrebe cvjećarstva je širokolisna veprina (Ruscus hypoglossum L.). Premda se radi o vrlo dekorativnoj vrsti, njena primjena kao vrste za rez ali i za sadnju na gradske zelene površine kod nas je onemogućena, između ostalog, i nepostojanjem domaće proizvodnje. Upravo je iz ovih razloga pokrenut projekt zaštite širokolisne veprine njenim uvođenjem u komercijalni uzgoj. U radu će stoga biti obrađeni aspekti zaštite ugroženih samoniklih ukrasnih vrsta kroz uzgoj na primjeru širokolisne veprine.A large number of plant species, many of them important for horticulture and crop production, are endangered in the nature. If the reason for their endangerment lies in over-exploitation for economic reasons, commercial production would be a way of their protection. One of the wild ornamental plants which is in Croatia exploited in the nature by florists, although it is under legal protection, is Ruscus hypoglossum. Even though the species is highly ornamental, its use as a cut plant or for planting in urban green areas is limited by, among other things, the non-existing domestic production. Precisely for these reasons, the project of protection through introduction into cultivation of this species was started.
