MEETING ABSTRACT Open AccessAdvanced cardiovascular imaging: from patientsto populationsDavid A BluemkeFrom 2012 Sino-American Symposium on Clinical and Translational Medicine (SAS-CTM)Shanghai, China. 27-29 June 2012Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of mor-bidity and mortality in both men and women in developednations. Gender and population differences in the preva-lence, presentation and prognosis of CVD, as well as inthe role of traditional risk factors in determining its riskhave been increasingly recognized. Thus, multi-ethnic stu-dies are necessary to fully understand the basis for optimalprevention and management of CVD.Cardiovascular imaging is a well-validated form of non-invasive diagnostic and prognostic testing. Coronaryartery calcium (CAC), carotid intima-media thickness(IMT), and elevated left ventricular (LV) mass and geo-metry as assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR)offer highly specific phenotype data on the extend ofCVD. Due to their high sensitivity, these modalities areincreasing used to characterize CVD risk in clinicallyasymptomatic individuals. Noninvasive imaging of theheart and blood vessels has the potential to replace inva-sive angiography for the evaluation of ischemic and non-ischemic cardiomyopathy. Computed Tomography (CT)angiography allows coronary vessels to be accuratelyassessed for stenosis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)at 1.5 Tesla and 3 Tesla offers superior evaluation ofmyocardial structure, function and perfusion, as well asatherosclerotic plaque and tissue composition. In sum-mary, new imaging techniques for the heart and bloodvessels offer the potential for advanced tools for patientdiagnosis. The application of advanced cardiac CT andMRI to study numbers of patients is underway in epide-miologic studies to help understand risk factor effectsand genetic relationships [1,2].Published: 17 October 2012References1.
